Cryptoquote Spoiler – 01/02/20

Image result for Roger Staubach

There are no traffic jams along the extra mile.”   —   Roger Staubach

(When I was a boy, there was no man in professional sports who I detested more than Roger Staubach!  Why?  Because he ALWAYS seemed to find a way to beat the teams I was rooting for.  Just so maddening.  When I got older I realized just how special this man was.  I knew that he had graduated from Annapolis, but I hadn’t realized that he served five years active duty, including tours in Vietnam, while in the Navy, immediately following graduation.  He didn’t get to the NFL until the age of 27.   Maybe his military career prepared him to be the consummate leader that he was when he turned pro, because Roger was one cool customer.  The game was nowhere’s near the pass happy game that it is today, but he could beat you both with his arm and his legs.  Over my 50 + years of watching professional football I’ve liked a lot of great quarterbacks, but none who I’ve admired more than Roger Staubach.  I will probably never, ever be a Dallas Cowboy’s fan, but for my money Roger was the G.reatest  O.A.ll  T.ime!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

P.S.  I almost forgot!  We welcome Roger to the Cryptoquote Club today!  Maybe not as big a deal as the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but still a very high honor.      YUR

ROYSR  =  SORRY,  VAHYE  =  HEAVY,  CODAIZ  =  ZODIAC,  RITEAD  =  TIRADE   —   Giving us:  ORRYHEVZACRDE

Clue/Question:  He refused to wear his seat belt when behind the wheel, and that . . .

Answer:  DROVE HER CRAZY

(Ooh!  A public service stinky pun!  There are still some people out there who refuse to wear them.  Some out of a bizarre notion of machismo, and others because they don’t like those new-fangled contraptions.  They’ve only been standard equipment in automobiles for the last 56 years!  But, willful ignorance never seems to go away.

All of today’s clue words are familiar old friends.  Ralis95 is getting a bit of a New Year’s break!  Three of the jumbles came up as new, but we’ve definitely seen “vahye” sometime before.  I almost had to back into “tirade”, but I picked up on it right before reading the clue/question.  I kept seeing RITEAID for a while.  Oy!  The answer letter layout was a beautiful thirteen letter jumble.  Definitely not obvious, but the layout of the answer slots, and the wife’s demeanor in the cartoon, made solving the final answer a breeze.

Fine cartoon of an older married couple going . . . somewhere.  I bet he’s not buckling up just to spite her.  They kinda look like that sort of couple.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
