Clue/Question:  When it comes to lighting a candle, using matches is usually a – – –

Answer:  SUREFIRE WAY

(Sure.  As long as they always stay dry.  Once they get wet – even after they’ve dried out –  they usually just kind of crumble when you try to strike them.  Still, they beat trying to light some tinder with a flint and steel!  But, that’s probably the most reliable method.  Ooh!  Striking a match gives you that great stinky sulfur smell, so this double qualifies as a stinky pun!

None of the clue words are new today.  However, three of the jumbles appear to be so.  We’ve definitely seen “fiwst” some time before.  The answer letter layout made for a nifty eleven letter jumble.  It gave nothing away.  It was the combination of the cartoon guy’s dialog, the leading nature of the clue/question, and the hyphen in the final answer blocks that gave me the answer.

Fine seasonal cartoon of a couple finishing up their Jack-O-Lanterns.  Not sure if I’m going to carve a pumpkin this year.  It’s definitely more fun when you have kids living in the house.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I used to buy the jumbo wood matches and dipped the end in candle wax to waterproof them. Worked pretty well, but you might need a longer strike area to scrape off the wax to expose the match head. 🙂

For me short matches mean burned fingers when trying to light a candle that is inside a taller holder. I guess on a pumpkin you could make a “back door” so you could light the candle with no singed fingers. LL
