You can never tell the depth of the well by the length of the pump handle.”   —   H. W. Thompson

(The only H.W. Thompson I can come up with is James Harrison Wilson Thompson, a designer/businessman, who had served in the OSS, during WWII.  The OSS was the forerunner of today’s CIA.  This doesn’t sound like a quote from this kind of guy, but who knows!  Anybody know of another H.W. Thompson?  Either way, we welcome H.W. to the Cryptoquote Club today.  He was a big shot in Thailand, but disappeared in 1967, from some place in Malaysia.  Maybe his CIA past caught up to him?  Be well and do good friends.)   —   YUR

Answer: DARTIST

(A stinky rhyming pun?  Certainement!  C’est évident, mes amies.  But, I like it.  And, if you’re a Jumble devotee, you like it too.  Most people don’t know this, but Vinnie – his pals always called him that – was also great at Skee-Ball.  But boy, was he lousy at air-hockey!  That’s where Paul always cleaned his clock.  And, Paul always did much better with the ladies, too.

A fairly simple day with the jumbled clue words today.  They’re all familiar clue words, although we haven’t seen “stanza” in a while.  Three of the jumbles are coming up as new, but we’ve all seen “sudeo” many times before.  The answer letter layout was a brief, but fairly cryptic, seven letter jumble.

Great cartoon of Van Gogh and his buddy, Paul Gauguin.  Paul was fortunate to have lived in the later 19th Century.  He traveled to exotic locations, and painted beautiful native women.  He even “married” one.  Today, the #MeToo Movement would’ve had him castrated!  Apparently, he wasn’t exactly a saint.  But, who the heck really is?  Or was, especially back in the days of “The White Man’s Burden”?  But, have Americans really changed all that much?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
