Clue/Question: Drive-In movie theaters were popular because people flocked to them – – –

Answer: IN DROVES
(Aah! Those were the days! I was still going to the Drive-In up until the late 70’s, but I moved to NYC in 1980 and no longer used a car, for a number of years. You don’t hear the expression: “In droves” all that much these days, but most of us old-timers know it. If nothing else, from watching Western movies, where the cowboys would embark on long, heroic cattle drives. Our cowboys always showed disdain for the sheep herders though. They called them mutton-punchers. I guess their flocks were just unwanted competition for the grass and water. But, the shepherds were just plain folk, like them.
Can you believe that Hoyt is giving us TWO new clue words today?! Yup, both “curvy” and “milder” have no presence on the most recent edition of the world famous ralis95 clue word database. The big boss-man is keeping very busy lately. I . . . ahem, chose to back into “milder” this morning. The other three came to me right away, although all four jumbles appear to be new. The answer letter layout is a great eight letter jumble. Not obvious, at all.
As a kid, I always got a kick out of the D.A. haircut. Polite people referred to it as a “duck’s tail”, but it really stood for “duck’s ass”! Remember when saying “damn” and “ass” was really exciting? Of course, it could still get you your mouth washed out with soap! Which is why I have very little tolerance for IPAs. They both have that flowery taste. Ugh! Oh, yeah! And, jasmine rice too! Nasty stuff! Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
