I appreciate the chance to visit my mom on Mother’s Day – it’s like taking a refresher course in guilt.”   —   Woody Allen

(A quote that we should’ve seen two weeks ago???  I’m not feelin’ it.  That’s why I’m giving you guys this photo montage of canine war hero Sgt. Stubby!  Considering it’s Memorial Day weekend, this seems more appropriate.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 05/26/19 (Oh, ralis95!)

Visual Description:  Drumming up business.

BRAVLE  =  VERBAL,  OFROGT  =  FORGOT,  BYUCON  =  BOUNCY,  FNIEEL  =  FELINE,  MAIDSY  =  DISMAY,  SRWPAL  =  SPRAWL   —   Giving us:  VERFTCOCFIEDIMRA

Clue/Question:  The car dealership put up new billboards to – – –

Pre-Answer:  Three Words  (5-letters)  (4-letters)  (7-letters)

Answer:  DRIVE MORE TRAFFIC

(Maybe not the punniest of puns, but I was able to get it fairly easily.  Somehow, I was able to see DRIVE right away.  Then MORE made sense.  And, from FRTCFIA I was able to come up with TRAFFIC.  Easier than some of the recent Sunday Jumbles, I’d say.

I was a little DISMAYed to find out that we actually have two new clue words today.  I hope ralis95 is reading his email!  Not so much with BOUNCY, as I kind of questioned myself as I was writing it.  But, how have we avoided FELINE all this time???  Not too surprisingly, all of the jumbles appear to be new.  Saw them all quickly, even though BOUNCY did give me some trepidation.  The answer letter layout was a beautiful sixteen letter jumble.  Definitely nothing obvious about it.

Fine cartoon.  A little reminiscent of previous cartoons that had billboards in them, but that’s alright.  It’s looking to me like it’s outside Chicago.  And, I’m sure the Tribune folks appreciate that.  Enjoy the Memorial Day weekend, folks.  But, don’t lose sight of what it’s all about.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

LIGUD  =  GUILD,  THIDW  =  WIDTH,  CREFIE  =  FIERCE,  PORGEH  =  GOPHER   —   Giving us:  GUWTIEPH

Clue/Question:  Because he’d put on a few pounds, he had to tell the other hikers to – – –

Image result for chubby mountain climber

Answer:  WEIGHT UP

(Kind of a stinky double pun!  The *designed* pun is that the others have to wait for him.  But also, he is below them, and he still has to climb up to them.  Gotta love it!

Today’s clue words aren’t all super regular, but we have seen them all before.  However, all of their jumbles appear to be new.  Kind of ironic that one of today’s clue words was an aspect of yesterday’s cartoon.  For those of you with short memories, or who did not do yesterday’s Jumble, that would be “gopher”.  As in yesterday’s golf club head cover.  The answer letter layout was a well thought out eight letter jumble.  Nothing obvious about it in my book.

Great mountain scene, hiking cartoon!  Not some gentle, rolling hill kind of mountains, but some craggy looking tors.  I wonder if any of their yells are resulting in echoes?  Hmm.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Clue/Question:  He’d caught his opponent cheating, and now the golfer had a – – –

Image result for messy golf scorecard

Answer:  SCORE TO SETTLE

(No, no!  You haven’t stumbled upon the Cryptoquote Spoiler.  That’s coming a little later.  I just figured it was a good way to describe the situation . . . that happens far too often in golf.  Very appropriate Jumble pun though!  The guy definitely has a score to settle.  But, if the “opponent” is his boss he better bite his tongue!  This puts me in mind of Larry Tate, from “Bewitched”.  I don’t specifically remember any golfing scenes, but it’s the kind of weaselly thing that Darren’s boss used to regularly pull.  Now, I’ve gone off on a twenty minute tangent, looking up “Bewitched” pics and such.  Some days I just can’t help myself.  I finally ended up with a look at Grace Lee Whitney’s IMDB page.  She appeared on “Bewitched”, at least one time, but is better known for her recurring role as Yeoman Janice Rand, on “Star Trek”.  Unfortunately, she’s dead now too, like so many of the original cast.  But, we do still have Kirk, Sulu, Checkov and Uhura!  Back to the Jumble?

All of today’s clue words were par for the course . . . nothing new.  But, all of the jumbles are coming up as new.  They all came to me right away.  The answer letter layout was a beautifully cryptic thirteen letter jumble.  Nothing obvious in it, but I did figure out the final answer pretty quickly.

Fun golf scene cartoon.  The one guy definitely looks like a liar.  I like the “Mr. Gopher” golf club head cover!  And, you can see a little golf cart near the top of the drawing.  Tons of fun.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Clue/Question:  Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series was a gem, – – –

Image result for Don Larsen

Answer:  THREW AND THREW

(Excellent stinky pun!  Great homonym pun.  This sublime moment in Baseball history took place over 62 years ago, so it’s even older than yer uncle!  It remains the only perfect game, and only no-hitter, to be pitched in a World Series game.  And, old Don is still with us at age 89.  And, he did pitch into the first ten years of my life.  But sadly, I can’t say – for certain – that I ever saw him pitch.  I really didn’t follow baseball until about age 10.

Surprisingly, we have a new clue word today, in “entry”.  The other three were faithful old friends.  All four of the jumbles came up as new.  The answer letter layout was a very impressive thirteen letter jumble.  I don’t think it gave anything away.

Great recreation of that iconic moment.  I would not be surprised if those were the exact words exchanged between Don and Yogi.  A great cartoon and a great Jumble.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Answer:  MUSIC TO HER EARS

(Punnerful!  Punnerful!  Besides fond memories of sort of being forced to watch The Lawrence Welk Show – before cable we were very limited in channels and shows – I also have great memories of my brother singing along to Yes, wearing headphones!  Painfully off key, messing up about half of the lyrics, and loud as hell.  But, he always had a big smile on his face!  I think it was from their “Fragile” album.  “Roundabout”  and “Long Distance Runaround”.  Great songs.  Much better when Yes sings them!

We have been spared any new clue words today.  However, all of the jumbles appear to be new.  I got them all immediately.  The answer letter layout was a Wunnerfully cryptic fourteen letter jumble.  It hid the answer splendidly.

Fine music shop cartoon.  “Second Spin”!  I like both of their tee shirts.  The guy with the record spindle adapter, and the girl with a Lady Gaga shirt.  I still think “A Star Is Born” got ripped off at the Oscars!  It was a very moving film, and better overall than “Bohemian Rhapsody”, which I did enjoy, but not as much as Star.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
