Jumble Spoiler – 02/15/19

Visual Description:  Braking news!

HTISF  =  SHIFT,  TOPOH  =  PHOTO,  ACCSTU  =  CACTUS,  LEEUFY  =   EYEFUL   —   Giving us:  SHTHOTCACTEEU

Clue/Question:  When the anchorman was told there was a pursuit in progress, he – – –

Answer:  CUT TO THE CHASE

(Very good!  I think this partially how the expression came about, anyway.  So, it’s not really a stinky pun.  Just kind of an update to the original reason for the saying.

No new clue words today.  Three of the jumbles appear to be new, with “leeufy” having definitely been used before.  It’s a great jumble though.  The answer letter layout was a great 13-letter jumble.  But the cartoon, and the clue/question, just set this one up so well, that I got it immediately.

Fine cartoon.  My cable provider does not carry Jumble TV.  does yours?  I’m off to watch “Green Book”.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Hey y’all… I missed you. My trip went well. Yesterday I finished catching up on almost a month of missed Jumbles, Unclerave columns and comments. Doing 3-5 new puzzles a day, this took me a week. I waited until yesterday to go back over all the Unclerave columns and comments to avoid any spoilers.

The Not-So-Good: SHIFT appeared both Feb. 9 and Feb. 15. And RIGHT/WRIGHT/WRITE puns also appeared twice in the past month and are joining golf and COURSE/COARSE puns for been-there done-that status.

The Very Good: I loved all the new regular words this past month. SEPTUM in particular took me about three minutes to untangle–notice it has STUMP built-in. I also give a big thumbs’ up for two clever and fresh final answers, GREAT STRIDES and especially GAIN TRACTION with an -ING rabbit hole. (By that I mean: the clue sets up a verb, but trying to find an -ING gerund, usually a good tactic, gets you nowhere). Both these answers flowed beautifully from the clue while still being a challenge to see.

    Stride on all!

Sorry that should have been **6th** and 15th for SHIFT. Dyslexia is a ditch.

Not in a very long time, Smitty. When I did go on, it just seemed so contrived to me. It IS well written though. I will give them that much. There are some things that are a little hinky about it, and I have a few suspicions, but nothing that I care to say publicly. I’m sure that there are a number of people who would rather go there for the *answers* than wait for me to post my nonsense, and that’s their prerogative. It’s a big internet. And, I’m a big boy, who can take the “que sera sera” approach to the issue.
