You Once Belonged

I was planning on writing something on this 50 year anniversary, but it slipped my mind(?). Good thing an even better writer followed through on it! — YUR

50 Years Ago Today,
Beatles Called it Quits

It was the last time they played together but no one knew it then. Their first public performance in over three years. And yes, it’s now been half a century ago. If they used to make us feel forever young, now they date us. But so does life.
It’s likely that great part of the living today wasn’t around then yet. And countless who were, have already ended their journey. For those in between, though, what a feeling having had The Beatles around to create the soundtrack of our early dreams.
John Lennon, PaulMcCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, were concluding one of the most recounted musical trajectories of all times. And way before their century was over too, they’d inscribed their names at the heart of an entire generation.
They were as important for their…

Great thoughts speak only to the thoughtful mind, but great actions speak to all mankind.”   —   Theodore Roosevelt

(Well, ol’ Teddy was both a man of action, and a man of the people!  Great actions can transcend knowledge, and even language.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 01/31/19

Visual Description:  Goldfish on steroids!

NYIKD  =  DINKY,  NORGP  =  PRONG,  INCSEK  =  SICKEN,  LAEVBI  =  VIABLE   —   Giving us:  IKOGENIB

Clue/Question:  The carp that hid behind the rock in the garden pool was – – –

Answer:  BEING KOI

(Three day old, dead fish, stinky pun!  But, that just means that it’s a good Jumble answer!  Right?  There might even be some folks out there who are not familiar with koi ponds.  Our friends at WordPress do not recognize the word “koi”, so that is definitely saying something on the subject.

All of today’s clue words are familiar old friends.  Three of the jumbles came up as new, with “norgp” having definitely been used sometime before.  They were all easy solves, for me.  The answer letter layout was a nifty 8-letter jumble.  It has sort of a Japanese sound to it, don’t you think?  You might be interested to know that “ikogen” is the Japanese word for “fondness”.  If you’re a fan of the television show “Friends” you can store this little bit of trivia with the word “unagi”, which Ross thought meant “brain”, but actually means “eel”.  Some of you might even like some unagi with your koi!

The cartoon is an understated underwater masterpiece.  Besides the main koi couple and rocks, you also have some underwater plants, some lily pads, and some other koi being fed by . . . some air-breather.  It also looks like the lady koi has got her fins folded in front of her, further expressing her “I don’t think so” attitude.  Great stuff, guys.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Always get married early in the morning.  That way, if it doesn’t work out, you haven’t wasted the whole day.”   —   Mickey Rooney

(Very funny quote, from a guy who was only married about . . . mmm, eight times!  We either had this quote, or a similar marriage quote of his, sometime before.  He lived a nice long life, and he was a performer from age three, ’til almost the day he died!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 01/30/19

Visual Description:  Jeff, Kathy and the pooches.

OGYOE  =  GOOEY,  SAHHR  =  HARSH,  WTREET  =  WETTER,  ANNPIK  =  NAPKIN   —   Giving us:  GOOHRWTTNIN

Clue/Question:  The guitarist came up with a new melody, but didn’t think it was – – –

Answer:  WORTH NOTING

(A lilting, musical pun!  I wouldn’t call it stinky.  If Dick Clark were doing a “rate-a-record” the kids would say:  “It’s got a good beat and you can dance to it”.  Although, if Jeff is composing something along the lines of a Wilco song it might be a little difficult to dance to.  Well, okay.  Maybe a slow dance, or something a little offbeat.

All of today’s clue words are oldies but goodies.  However, all the jumbles came up as new.  None of them tripped me up any.  The answer letter layout was a fine 11-letter jumble.  It was cryptic enough to make getting the answer a bit of a challenge.  My initial reaction was that it might be GOING something, but there was only one G.  Fortunately, the leading nature of the clue/question helped me to see the punny answer.

Nice domestic scene of Jeff and Kathy’s life.  Jeff better put some shoes on!  It looks like one of his little buddies is looking for a walk.  He better bundle up, ’cause baby it’s cold outside!  Be well and do good, friends.  Stay safe, folks.)   —  YUR

Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.”   —   Melody Beattie

(There is just no arguing against gratitude!  Melody had to overcome a lot of obstacles to get to where she is.  We all can learn from her earned wisdom.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 01/29/19

Visual Description:  Melodramatic drama.

GAWRE  =  WAGER,  CINWE  =  WINCE,  VTANIE  =  NATIVE,  PLLETE  =  PELLET   —   Giving us:  AGRINCNTIET

Clue/Question:  The stage performers often had problems – – –

Answer:  INTERACTING

(Offstage romances aren’t uncommon, but they’re frowned upon, and for good reason.  They can result in stinky puns!  Like this one.  Also, try to stay away from eating onions before romantic scenes.

All of today’s clue words are classics . . . like Romeo and Juliet.  Howev’r, all the jumbles are . . . new . . . as “all the world’s a stage.”  None of them stump’d me though.  The answer letter layout was the most wondrous of jumbles.  Truly cryptic, indeed.

Super balcony scene cartoon.  Great garb, on the actors, and on the stereotypical director!  Love the ascot, the beret, and the little megaphone.  And, let’s not forget the footlights.  Lots of fun.  The Bard would be pleased, methinks.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

We gain the strength of the temptation we resist.”   —   Ralph Waldo Emerson

(We need this quotation in order to maintain our New Year’s resolutions!  I hope it’s not too late for you guys.  LOL!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.   Happy 83rd Birthday to Alan Alda!  You’ve outlived Ralph!  And, Congrats on the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award!  They couldn’t have given it to a better guy.   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Vociferous off-road ve-hicle.

RAYHI  =  HAIRY,  HTALC  =  LATCH,  WLATLE  =  WALLET,  CEFOFE  =  COFFEE   —   Giving us:  HILHWETFFE

Clue/Question:  The spare tire didn’t always fit in with the other four tires and often felt like a – – –

Answer:  FIFTH WHEEL

(Ohh!  A literal/figurative pun.  And, there seems to be an air of originality here as well.  In that case, I don’t think this should be called a stinky pun.  This blogger approves of this bogger.

Nothing to report to ralis95, today!  They are all old familiar clue words.  Three of the jumbles are coming up as new, with “rayhi” having definitely been used before.  A very nice 10-letter answer letter layout jumble.  It did a fine job of camouflaging the answer.

Cute animated cartoon.  It was actually a little distracting.  I don’t like to look at the cartoon until after I’ve un-jumbled the clue words, and written down the answer letters.  But, talking tires have a way of catching my eye!  Fun Monday Jumble.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  I thought I was on the mend, as of last night, but when I awoke this AM the knee was – somehow – locked, and it feels worse than before!  Cold compress did no good.  I’m switching to heat.   —   YUR
