Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 12/23/18

Visual Description:  Words rule, numbers drool!

GLIPTH  =  PLIGHT,  NSUIEW  =  UNWISE,  MIEILS  =  SIMILE,  NNNAOC  =  CANNON,  MYFIAN  =  INFAMY,  HRWATT  =  THWART   —   Giving us:  PGTNSEIMIANOIATHT

Clue/Question:  The team that scored the first goal was ahead – – –

Pre-Answer:  Five Words (and a given)  (2-letters)  (4-letters)  (5-letters)  (2-letters)  THE  (4-letters)

Answer:  AT THAT THIS POINT IN THE GAME

(A very impressive, albeit stinky, pun.  I think it qualifies as both literal and figurative.  A goal counts as one point, and that moment within the chronological confines of the game counts as a point in time.  But, you all knew that.

Our old pal ralis95 does not do the Sunday Jumble, so he has nothing to worry about, as far as new clue words go.  However, all of the jumbles appear to be new.  As good as they were, none of them tripped me up any.  The answer letter layout was a very impressive 17-letter jumble.  Nothing about it screamed out the answer.

Great Soccer cartoon.  It captures both “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat”.  Truth be told, the term Football IS more descriptive of the game, but American Football kicks Soccer’s butt!  Plus, I enjoy pissing off the Limeys!  At most the Limey Soccer matches there is generally more action in the stands than on the field.  Bunch of drunken hooligans!  LOL!  Gotta love how the Jumblers are beating the Sudokus too.  Hey, ya gotta root for the home team!  Fun Sunday Jumble.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

DOH! You are correct, sir!!! I made a major assumption, and did not bother checking off the letters. Mea culpa! I will make the correction forthwith! Thanks, Joseph. — YUR

I got all the clue words easily today, but didn’t really have time to solve the puzzle, even though I got the two letter words and Game. I didn’t spend much time to decipher the other two words. As far as football vs soccer, in England, the game has the longstanding ‘Football Association. It’s been around since the 1800s sometime, and governs the sport. It’s usage is linked to ‘association football’, which is really what the game is, as opposed to rugby football, and the slang/abbreviation use of ‘soc’ (soesh) as a shortcut which became ‘soc-er’. And then it became soccer here in the US and Canada (the North American colonies). Though maybe it really ought to be pronounced ‘soesher’. 😀

Good final answer. This was another Sunday puzzle in which Universal’s online Flash version at seattletimes.com didn’t have room for the whole final answer, so they scrunched the given word “THE” into a tiny space. Fortunately this time I saw they’d done that, so I wasn’t stymied by it.

Joseph Luke…thank you, I thought I’d lost it. I had AT THIS POINT IN THE GAME and had the husb check it for me and he told me I was wrong. Finally I checked to see what I’d done since I didn’t have enough Ts for the answer the husb was seeing on the blog. Oops Unc….made perfect sense! LL
