Curtain Raiser

If you’re not happy with things, make sure you get out and vote on November the 6th. (And pray that the obscene gerrymandering isn’t a factor this time, like in 2016.) — YUR

The Only News Fit to Print, Colltalers

A journalist was murdered by rulers of his own country. A toddler, separated from relatives by immigration, showed up in court alone. A torture apologist got to lead the presidential race of the world’s fifth-largest nation. These were breaking news last week.
And yet, in the U.S., news was the 10-minute rant-and-praise the president performed at the White House by a mentally unsound superstar. That’s the absolutely unintended truth hidden in Trump’s, and every would-be dictator’s, motto: ‘the press is the enemy.’
It is not, of course, and besides all it means for a healthy democracy, the most consequential role of a free press is to present facts as they actually are, and reality as it unfolds. That requires courage, expedience and trust that the reader doesn’t need help sorting out the content. And yet, if a news organization is driven by ratings…

Cryptoquote Spoiler – 10/20/18

No person is your friend who demands your silence, or denies your right to grow.”   —   Alice Walker

(That one is kind of a no-brainer, Alice.  I know I’d have a hard time calling someone like that “friend”.  It sounds to me a little more like politics/diplomacy, where they call someone an “ally”, and then smile as they have to eat a shit sandwich.  Be well and do good, friends.  And don’t forget, yer uncle encourages comments!)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 10/20/18

Visual Description:  Hurlers’ celebration.

NAPKL  =  PLANK,  CTDHI  =  DITCH,  XIEPER  =  EXPIRE,  LICCIN  =  CLINIC   —   Giving us:  LADTHPIECLNI

Clue/Question:  To win the game, the starter and the two relievers – – –

Answer:  ALL PITCHED IN

( . . . in different parts of the game?  This made for a timely, stinky pun, with the NLCS still in play.  The Brewers are looking to be this year’s Cinderella team, and hope to get to the World Series against the Boston Red Sox.  The Dodgers are looking to deny the Brewers and make it back to Series, to try to finish what they couldn’t last year against the Astros.  I’ve only seen an inning or so of the entire playoffs.  I know they’re out there, like on TBS or ESPN, but I miss the old days when the playoffs, like the series, used to be on NBC, ABC, or FOX.  I liked having my regular shows preempted by the playoffs for a few weeks.  It was one of the ways I knew it was Autumn.  I know the network and league execs, and advertisers, are hoping that the Dodgers make it to the series, but I’d like to see the underdog Brewers represent the National League.  I guess we’ll know by the end of the night.

No new clue words, but three new jumbles.  Hoyt has used “liccin” some time in the past.  I was able to see all the clue words right away today.  The answer letter layout was a great jumble.  It made me think for a couple of minutes.

Fun cartoon.  A little generic with the ballplayers’ uniforms.  It’s a little strange that the one pitcher is wearing different colored shoes.  Go Brew Crew!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
