Sunday Cryptoquote Spoiler – 10/14/18

A pool player in a tuxedo is like whipped cream on a hot dog.”   —   Minnesota Fats

(This one took me some time to get started.  I knew the second word couldn’t be GOOD, FOOD, BOOK or LOOK, because of the third word.  I was going with FOOL for a while, but couldn’t think of a FOOL FLA_ _ _.  Plus, the author’s name was kind of puzzling for a long while.  It’s a great quote though!  Made me laugh.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Clue/Question:  He’d gotten a job in the men’s cologne section and was now – – –

Pre-Answer:  Three Words  (5-letters)  (3-letters)  “(7-letters)”

Answer:  FRONT AND SCENTER

(Beautiful pun!  Stinky in so many ways!  With the advent of modern, good hygiene it’s hard to understand why – otherwise rational – people would want to immerse themselves in perfumes and colognes.  I think part of it is tradition/conditioning, and the other is effective marketing.  They tell us these scents are so alluring, and they will make us more desirable.  And, we buy into it, hook, line . . . and stinker!  Too many of them are either over flowery, or they smell like bug spray, to me.  And, some people don’t seem to understand what constitutes enough, and what is too friggin’ much.  Soap, powder, and deodorant – daily – is all anybody really needs.  And, I know some people who don’t even need deodorant.  I go for the trifecta though.  People who spray others, without permission, should be charged with assault with a toxic substance.

All of Sunday’s clue words are old favorites, but all of their jumbles appear to be new.  Hey there, ralis95!  Just an FYI.  The word “runoff” comes up under the F’s, as the Alpha Equivalent of the Word “ffnoru”.  A mild snafu.  The answer letter layout was a nice 15-letter jumble.  Nothing about it was obvious.

Nice department store cartoon.  Pretty soon we’ll have to explain to the kids what these were.  Amazon.com, and other online shopping venues, are killing the department stores.  Interesting times we live in.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Cryptoquote Spoiler – 10/16/18

Some people have nothing to say, but you have to listen a long time to find out.”   —   Anonymous

(Yep.  Some people just seem to have diarrhea of the mouth.  They’re enamored with the sound of their own voice, and they seem to think that they’re so interesting.  Yeesh.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 10/16/18

Visual Description:  Jumbling jumbos?

GABYG  =  BAGGY,  DEMMO  =  MODEM,  VRALGE  =  GRAVEL,  SOCARS  =  ACROSS   —   Giving us:  BAGDEMGRELCSS

Clue/Question:  After being crowned “Jumble Champion” he preferred his – – –

Answer:  EGGS SCRAMBLED

(Wow!  I hear this guy, Paul, is so good at the Jumble that . . . he can un-scramble his eggs!  LOL!  Now that would be a neat trick.  This was not a traditional, stinky pun today.  But, it worked.

All of today’s clue words are familiar old friends.  We’ve seen the jumble “demmo” before, but the other three seem to be new.  It took me a few looks before I picked up on “across”.  But, why is it ACCREDIT, ACCRETE and ACCRUE, but not ACCROSS?  They all have the short A sound.  Was the word ACROSS originally pronounced with a hard A as A-CROSS, or something?  Just one more example of why people say English is a very difficult language, I guess.

Cute diner scene cartoon.  I have no idea who the two gentlemen are.  Maybe David, or Jeff, will enlighten us.  I do like the diner’s name though.  “The Pun Always Rises”!  Lots of fun.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
