    The meaning is a little opaque, UR. I’m wondering if he was using “genius” in the early 19th century sense of “inspiration” or “enlightened intuition.” If so, he might have been encouraging his readers to follow their intuition all the way, even if it leads them away from conventions, religions, accepted literary forms, etc. Learn how to define success by your own lights, something like that.
