(Tough) Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 09/30/18

Visual Description:  DIY travel planners.

HHENPY  =  HYPHEN,  GEINNS  =  ENSIGN,  DULCOY  =  CLOUDY,  BEGLIR  =  GERBIL,  RWHAMT  =  WARMTH,  DARMED  =  MADDER   —   Giving us:  HHEENSCLOGRIWAHADD

Clue/Question:  He wanted to go to the mountains.  She wanted to go to the beach.  So they – – –

Pre-Answer:  Four Words  (8-letters)  (4-letters)  (3-letters)  (3-letters)

Answer:  SEARCHED HIGH AND LOW

(I spun my wheels for quite a while on this answer!  I feel the boys may have used a little misdirection on this one.  Maybe I’m just a little old to pick up on this kind of answer.  I knew the first word had to end in ED, but I thought words two and three were EACH OWN.  That left me with HHSLGRIAD, and I couldn’t do squat with that.  I went to a sports bar to watch my team, came back and offered it to my daughter and her boyfriend.  The junk I wrote in negatively affected them, and they put it down to try later.  I picked it up again and thought the first word might be related to COMPROMISED, so I Googled synonyms and got excited when I saw CONCEDED, but there was only one C.  From that search it finally hit me!  SEARCHED!  After eliminating those letters HIGH AND LOW made a ton of sense.  For a while I thought maybe some of the circles were in the wrong spots.  Nope.  Just a tough Jumble.

No new clue words, but all of the jumbles came up as new.  I had to skip and come back to both “ensign” and “gerbil”.  I’m very glad I didn’t have to back into either one of those words, all things considered.  Needless to say, I think the answer letter layout is a master jumble!

Fun cartoon.  Once you have the answer it’s obvious what the couple are doing!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Sunday Cryptoquote Spoiler – 09/30/18

The spirit of liberty is the spirit which is not too sure that it is right.”   —   Judge Learned Hand

(I wonder how ol’ Billings – his given first name – would view this Judge Kavanaugh sex abuse allegation/confirmation hearings.  He abhorred the witch hunts of McCartyism.  And, for lack of a better term, we are seeing a variation of this kind of behavior/mentality with the #MeToo movement.  Read the following quote, where I’ve substituted the word “traitor” with “sexual abuser”.

My friends, will you not agree that any society which begins to be doubtful of itself; in which one man looks at another and says: “He may be a sexual abuser,” in which that spirit has disappeared which says: “I will not accept that, I will not believe that—I will demand proof. I will not say of my brother that he may be a sexual abuser,” but I will say, “Produce what you have. I will judge it fairly, and if he is, he shall pay the penalties; but I will not take it on rumor. I will not take it on hearsay. I will remember that what has brought us up from savagery is a loyalty to truth, and truth cannot emerge unless it is subjected to the utmost scrutiny”—will you not agree that a society which has lost sight of that, cannot survive?   —  Judge Learned Hand

Personally, I don’t want Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.  But, the republicans refused to even consider Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland, leaving the country in the lurch for an unprecedented 10 months, despite his being a moderate judge.  The democrats knew they couldn’t/wouldn’t pull the same stunt against Neil Gorsuch’s nomination, so he got a pass.  But now, because the impending mid-term elections seem to favor the dems, they figure now is the appropriate time for a little payback.  That is what the republicans are alleging, and that’s what many democrats are admitting to.  Dr. Ford’s testimony was compelling, although she kind of rubs me the wrong way.  Kavanaugh’s testimony did not compel me one bit, and I do believe he was less than truthful on some points.  I thought his “emotion” and his “outrage” were contrived.  But 36 years is a long time, especially with no corroborating witnesses.  I’d like to believe her.  He looks like he might have been an overly macho, privileged frat-boy during his high school and college years.  If this assessment is accurate does a leopard change his spots?  And, is it fair to bring up ancient past behavior, not withstanding an actual, verifiable sexual assault/rape, or some other actual, verifiable violent crime?  Tough questions.  I’m torn between my political leanings, and my sense of fair play.  I thought that Anita Hill was much more compelling, with her testimony against Clarence Thomas, but to no avail.  I wouldn’t be devastated if Kavanaugh is somehow prevented from the big bench.  But, I wouldn’t feel proud of how he was kept out.  He said/she saids suck!  Maybe this final FBI probe will produce something a little more concrete?  I wouldn’t hold my breath on that.  Or, maybe the quote in the image above will bear another kind of fruit.  Stay tuned, folks.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Education is only a ladder to gather the fruit from the tree of knowledge, not the fruit itself.”   —   Source Obscure

(I know some people who make such a big deal about Ivy League schools.  I’m not one of them.  Plenty of dull, one-dimensional bozos come from those schools.  And, they’re not necessarily more knowledgeable than folk who went to “lesser’ schools.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Not passing on pastries.

SHYUK  =  HUSKY,  LORDE  =  OLDER,  UBPHAC  =  HUBCAP,  PLATEL  =  PALLE  —   Giving us:  SYOUBPT

Clue/Question:  She opened her store in a busy neighborhood.  Now she needed customers to – – –

Answer:  STOP BUY

(In the sweet “buy” and “buy”.  We shall meet in that beautiful store.  This pun smells like fresh baked bread!  Not stinky.  Sticky maybe.  Like cinnamon buns, but not stinky.  A tasty Jumble.  Yum!

Does anybody remember seeing “hubcap” sometime in the past?  It kinda sounds familiar to me, but it’s coming up as new, on the latest version of the ralis95 clue word database.  If it’s truly new, it will be added soon.  The other three are old friends.  I had a little trouble getting “older”.  I wish that were true in real life!  Apparently, they’ve used “platel” as a jumble before.  The answer letter layout was fairly challenging for being only 7 letters long.

Nice, busy street scene.  The place reminds me a little of Eats & Sweets, in Lafayette, CO.  Home of the banana bread ice cream sandwich!  With homemade baked goods, by Gretchen.  Featuring a number of gluten free options.  Their servers will make you smile.  If you’re in the neighborhood, stop “buy”!  Say howdy to Bobby and the gang.  Tell ’em Uncle Rave sent you.  LOL!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Gambling with reality.

MRUST  =  STRUM,  SLUPH  =  PLUSH,  PUABET  =  UPBEAT,  ECINET  =  ENTICE   —   Giving us:  STRLUHBATENTE

Clue/Question:  When it comes to winning money playing blackjack, it’s hard to – – –

Answer:  TURN THE TABLES

(This one did stump me for a minute, or two!  I was looking for BEAT THE HOUSE, and I checked off the letters for BEAT THE, until I saw that I couldn’t do anything with STRLUN.  But, I was able to spot the letters for TURN, which helped me to redirect!  I have to say that I’m very happy to see the guys de-glorifying gambling.

All of today’s clue words are old favorites, although all of their jumbles did come up as new.  The only one I really struggled with was “puabet”.  I had to skip it, and come back to it, before I realized it was going to be a word that started with a vowel.  Maybe, I’m just a little too negative to be “upbeat”.  After all, I didn’t find either Dr. Ford or Justice Kavanaugh to be particularly credible yesterday.  Despite what all the pundits and talking heads are saying.  She just seemed too rehearsed, and I felt he was putting on too much of a quasi-emotional act.  At times she sounded overly technical, and he sounded more like Homer Simpson saying he liked beer.  Maybe I’ve just witnessed too much feigned “outrage” over the last few years to be truly objective anymore.  I had very mixed feelings about the allegations from the beginning, and yesterday didn’t really move me one way, or the other.  Maybe Hoyt can use the word “jaded” in an upcoming Jumble.  I’ll be all over that baby!  Props to the Big Bald one for today’s answer letter layout!  I thought it did a superb job disguising the answer.

I always enjoy seeing cartoons that have Jeff, and some buddy, in them.  The friend looks familiar.  I’m pretty sure Jeff has used him in other Jumbles.  The casino guy talking resembles Steve Wynn a little.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits.”   —   Samuel Butler

(Fruits???  Okay, apples and pears.  Ooh, grapes!  But, what else?  Pumpkins?  I loves pumpkin pie, but are they a fruit?  Ya can’t exactly bite into a pumpkin, now can you!  He’s probably using “fruits” more metaphorically, lumping in veggies and such.  From a north-easterner’s perspective, I look more forward to the trade off of flowers for the fall foliage.  That’s my ticket.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I’m a big believer in accepting yourself and not really worrying about it.”   —   Jennifer Lawrence

(A wonderfully talented actress!  She can play the girl next door, or an international spy, just to name just a few.  Beautiful, sexy, outspoken and very intelligent.  I’d say I’m a fan.  We welcome her to the Cryptoquote Club, today!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Do the hustle!

TONEF  =  OFTEN,  HAKIK  =  KHAKI,  ELOPPE  =  PEOPLE,  NCCIES  =  SCENIC   —   Giving us:  OTEKKIPPSCC

Clue/Question:  For the pool shark, it was like stealing money, thanks to his ability to – – –

Answer:  PICK POCKETS

(Billiards halls usually have a shark, looking for some dupe.  Some patsy.  A “fish”.  Someone they can tease a bit, and then gobble up.  It’s a game within the game, for the shark.  The lesson is not to play pool for money, with strangers.

All of today’s clue words are old favorites.  We’ve seen the jumble “tonef” before, but the other three seem to be new.  I tried to make science out of “scenic”, before I ran out of room.  But, other than that, I had no troubles today.  The answer letter layout was an outstanding jumble.  A little unusual seeing three sets of repeating consonants.  The shark’s comment set up the answer for me.

Fine drawing of a pool table, and the cast of characters.  Just looking at the shark, I don’t think I would have bet with him.  He’s got that shifty look!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Smile and let everyone know that today, you’re a lot stronger than you were yesterday.”   —   Drake

(Sir Francis?  The snack cake person??  No.  It’s the Canadian pop star/actor.  My daughter used to watch him in some Canadian high school television drama.  Pre-“Glee”!  Not my cupa tea.  I’m more “Welcome Back Kotter”, “The White Shadow”, and “Fame”.  Yes, I’m old.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

OSOEG  =  GOOSE,  YARNO  =  RAYON,  FIDMEF  =  MIFFED,  TNEITY  =  ENTITY   —   Giving us:  OERNMIDEIT

Clue/Question:  They were taking a tour on horseback, which would start – – –

Answer:  RIDE ON TIME

(How’ bout dem apples, pahdnuh!?!  Horse apples that is!  Might be stinky to some people, but I love the smell of stinky puns in the morning.  Smells like . . . victory“Ride on, Josephine.  Baby, ride on.”

All of today’s clue words are old favorites, but all of their jumbles are coming up as new.  I was able to see them all ride away, today!  The answer letter layout was a fine little filly.  Disguised the big answer very nicely.

Another superior cartoon.  The guy is wearing a Michigan hat!  Not sure why they’re using the combined setting of beach and mountain.  Sounds like it might be a California thing.  I’ve got a California cousin who was quite the competitive cowgirl, in her day.  Took after her dad/my uncle who, unbeknownst to me, is a bit of cowboy legend, in some circles!  This made for a fun Jumble.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
