“Too bad that all the people who know how to run the country are driving cabs and cutting hair.” — George Burns
( . . . or writing dopey puzzle spoiler blogs! Nee Nathan Birnbaum, in 1896! Good ol’ Nate made it to 100 years of age, before kicking the bucket in 1996. Not as impressive as Olivia de Havilland, but definitely right up there. So sad to hear that we lost two great Americans within 24 hours of each other. First, of course, John McCain. And then Neil Simon. We are all a little poorer for their passing. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

~~From Paul W. Gerzon
I didn’t realize good ole George made it to 100; he was a class act.
I miss him and Benjamin (aka: Jack Benny).
We also lost Robin Leach. Him, Aretha, John, and Neil, each only a day apart.
I think we’ll especially miss John; he may have been the one in the Senate who was most willing to be an honest politician. Jeff Flake might have been second, but he’s leaving, too. Someone else has to step in to fill that role.
I wonder if anyone disagrees.
Aretha was roughly a week before the other three, but these last few weeks has cost us some giants, lwc! Maybe Flake could be persuaded to stay on, but he rally doesn’t impress me all that much anyway. He didn’t become “outspoken” until he announced he was stepping down. It’s easy to be the brave loudmouth as your sister is dragging you out of the bar!
There will definitely be a void, until someone tries to pick up the mantle. Who will it be remains to be seen. It really takes a certain kind of personality, and I’m not sure there is one currently out there.

In my local newspaper, Paul. The Journal News, which is a Gannett newspaper. I know the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle – another Gannett newspaper – carries it, but outside of those two newspapers I couldn’t tell you. I’m fairly certain you can’t find the Sunday Cryptoquote and Jumble anywhere online. You might want to sign up for an online subscription to one of the Gannett newspapers. I think The Journal News online only runs around $5.50 a month, which is pretty reasonable.
