Jumble Spoiler – 08/07/18

Visual Description:  From saggy and slack, to firm and compact.

Clue/Question:  When they replaced all the mattresses at the hotel, it was – – –

(Okay.  I’ve seen some stinky puns before, and I’ve always applauded them.  But, I cannot possibly defend today’s Jumble answer.  This has got to be the worst pun answer of all time!  It wasn’t the toughest to solve answer, but it even made me groan.  And, you know it’s bad when it makes yer Uncle Rave groan.  I feel that I need to issue one of those political candidate endorsements . . . in reverse.  I’m Uncle Rave, and I disapprove of this pun!  Yuck!

All of today’s clue words were old friends.  Two of the jumbles came up as new, with “geehd” and “blumme” having definitely been used before.  The jumble for chord was just the word backwards.  The answer letter layout was an awesome jumble.  It didn’t give either word of the answer away.  The phrasing of the clue/question and the highlighting of the new mattress is what led me to the answer.

Very humorous cartoon.  The new mattress positively sparkles, if that’s possible.  The old one is SO forlorn looking.  And, if you look real close at the floor by the old mattress, you’ll see bedbugs!  Eeew!  And, the mattress installer’s hat has ZZZZ on it!    Lots of fun!  But, that pun?  I’m not a bettor, but that pun smells like a wetter sweater – soaked in cheddar – and deserves a scarlet letter!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I threw in the towel after 13 minutes, feeling I’d gone as far as I could with this. (I’ve tried Damid’s technique of walking away and coming back to it, but I can’t stop spinning letters in my mind, which interferes with sleep, so I do Jumbles! in one sitting or not at all.) I hit the HINT button in the online puzzle twice to reveal MU… and then recognized the answer.

I did know we likely had a first-word adjective/adverb and second word with BED in it (since it wouldn’t fit in the first word). I thought of six four-letter words from these letters (only two of which–DUMB and MERE–were certain adjectives/adverbs; none of the six fit the clue). Somehow I missed MUCH. I think you had to see MUCH in the letters to have a good chance to solve this.

But I don’t think this puzzle was unfair at all, just very challenging. I don’t complain about being stumped when the answer flows from the clue and fits the cartoon, and this one did for me. So applause to David & Jeff. Well done.

We live on to fight another day.

Put failure if any behind and sleep soundly, all!

I have never seen a pun as smelly as this.
Shouldn’t somebody be filing charges about now ?

    “Indecent Exposure”, maybe ?

There should be some law on the books that deal with olfactory offenses, lwc! — 😉 YUR
