Sunday Cryptoquote Spoiler – 07/22/18

To the man whose senses are alive and alert there is not even the need to stir from one’s threshold.”   —   Henry Miller

(Interesting quote.  Definitely not one you’d expect a travel agency to use.  Maybe not enough of us have senses that are alive and alert – or maybe we just crave more – so we have the need for experiences and travel.   Strangely, this appears to be the first Henry Miller quote since I’ve been posting these spoilers.  Could this be a line from one of his characters?  Any Miller aficionados out there?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 07/22/18

Visual Description:  Charging into the early 20th Century!

FPRREE  =  PREFER,  DLIRED  =  RIDDLE,  BRUENM  =  NUMBER,  LIWEHA  =  AWHILE,  DEMTOS  =  MODEST,  POPESO  =  OPPOSE   —   Giving us:  PRIEMERWHMOTOO

Clue/Question:  When Edison invented the alkaline battery in 1901, people said – – –

Pre-Answer:  Four Words  (4-letters)  (5-letters)  (2-letters)  (3-letters)

Answer:  MORE POWER TO HIM

(That battery must’ve powered one heckuva flashlight!  Good old Tom.  Such a prolific inventor and businessman.  He had like over 1000 patents in the U.S. alone.  More than 2300 worldwide.  He was so successful that he could pal around with the likes of Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, and J.P. Morgan.  He also had – for a time – a very smart employee, by the name of Nikola Tesla!  But, they suffered from creative differences, and Nik had to go his own way.

Would you believe that we actually have a new clue word today?  Yup, somehow the word “riddle” had never been used as a Jumble clue word, until today.  So now, our dear friend, ralis95, will have to update his world famous clue word database, yet again.  David L. Hoyt is really on a roll, lately.  All of the jumbles came up as new today, although none of them stumped me.  I considered “smoted” for about two seconds, before realizing the word was “modest”.  The word SMOTE is already the past tense of SMITE, so there is no such word as “smoted”.  The answer letter layout was a fairly challenging jumble though.  Even though there’s nothing obvious there, I was able to see the word POWER, which led me to the answer.

Fine period piece cartoon.  It looks like Thomas Edison was a middle aged man when he invented the alkaline battery.  Fun Sunday Jumble!  Always be well, and continue to do good, friends.)   —   YUR
