Clue/Question:  When Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier, he went – – –

(Wonderful pun!  I don’t think even the worst pun-haters could complain about this one.  All of the clue words are familiar old friends.  However, all of their jumbles are coming up new today.  They were all pretty good, but I’d say “eyllva” might have been the toughest of them.

The answer letter layout was a magnificent fourteen letter jumble.  I’d say pretty cryptic, and not obvious.  A superior answer letter layout adds so much to a Jumble!

The cartoon is fairly simple, but still great.  The soldiers on the ground are relatively straightforward.  But, in the sky you can see the jet’s con-trail, where he’s building up to the speed of sound, and then . . . BOOM . . . he breaks the the sound barrier!  Very cool.  I remember, way back in the early ’60s, when my parents were still together, you would fairly frequently hear sonic booms.  They were very loud, and because it was during the heyday of the Cold War, I’m sure they put a lot of people on edge.  But, since I was between 3 – 6 years old, it didn’t bother me in the least.  I guess sometimes it is much better to be naive, than to understand mankind’s world.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Oh yeah, sonic booms were common especially back in the early 60s where I was growing up, too. Real window-rattlers. Check out The Right Stuff to see how crazy courageous were these test pilots like Chuck Yeager back in the early 50s as well as the first astronauts in the following decade.

    Fly on, all!

I saw Valley right away. The hard one for me was Oblong. I got the answer right away, for a change.

You brought up an old subject, unc.
I had forgotten about the sonic booms in the 1960s.

I grew up in southeast Texas where the old Ellington AFB was only a few miles away. We used to hear sonic booms so often that we stop paying attention.

The FAA must have put a stop to high-speed jets ’cause I don’t think anyone has heard booms since the ’60s (unless you live near a test base). All we have now are contrails.

    Some people think they’re “chemtrails”.
I suspect that is conspiracy-mania. The modern turbofan engines of today are a completely different technology than the old turbojets on those early jet fighters. The modern turbofans suck in more air, at higher temperatures, higher pressures, and leave behind bigger contrails in their wake.

    It’s not chemicals… it’s water vapor.

I’ve heard various explanations, lwc. I’m really not convinced one way or the other. There is a little more to it than what you cited, as in atmospheric conditions, and such. There’s still nothing that says that the trails created by the modern turbofan engines can’t ALSO be salted with various chemicals . . . from time to time. I’m sure most are benign, but no one can say definitively that they all are. Simple answers are are almost always preferable, but we’re not living in simple times.

Gee, unc. You’re such a sensible guy I hope you’re not going to slip down into the conspiracy abyss. That’s such a deep hole that once you’re in no one can climb out.

Besides, have you noticed, that if any of those conspiracies are true, we’d never be able to it.

On the other hand, I believe that anything is possible, but I want to see the proof. Of course, “proof” is hard to come by for anything, but at least show me some compelling evidence.

Pretty Johnny-on-the-spot, for a Saturday night, lwc. The “conspiracy abyss” is really not as deep as the abyss created by the government and corporate media, pal. They suck us in with the *stories* they want us to believe, and repeat them – ad nauseam – until even the implausible *seems* plausible. Most often they dismiss other theories, and refuse to take legitimate questions seriously, let alone answer them. They rely on those that accept everything without question, because so many *want to believe* that their leaders and media are honest and truthful.

I’m not completely sold on chemtrails, and many other *conspiracy* theories, but because governments love to lie, because – supposedly – people can’t handle the truth, I can’t dismiss them outright either.

I will agree that there are real conspiracies. Some before our time:

Tuskegee syphilis experiment, Operation Paperclip, the CIA suborning the assassination of the presidents of Chile, Indonesia, South Vietnam ,and who knows, maybe even the murder of our own president.

And some we’ve lived through, even if we didn’t know it: President Reagan sells surplus missiles to Iran, the nation that kidnapped 44 American embassy workers and held them for more than a year. Since Congress outlawed it, he chose to break the law and do it in secret. Afterwards, he took the money from that sale to buy weapons for the Contras to overthrow the elected government of Nicaragua. That also was against the law, so it, too, was done in secret.

We impeached a president because he chooses to diddle a wiling 24-year-old grown woman, yet we look the other way for a president who suborns the integrity of the United States in order to overthrow and/or assassinate elected governments and elected presidents.

Yes, unc, I agree that there are real conspiracies. But then what ? What are we going to do about it? What are you going to do ? What is anybody going to do ?

Thanks for all the historical references, lwc! All any of can do is spread the word. Get people to question the status quo, and elect people who share in the values of truth and transparency. And, it would be nice if our country really cared about justice, and correcting injustice. That might change some of the alliance paradigm, but that has been long overdue anyway. I’m certainly not going to hold my breath on that one, as I’m pretty sure who is really calling the shots in this country. But, I also think we have talked enough on the subject. We can revisit it later.

I remember the sonic booms….we’d be in the yard, hear a plane in the distance, and wait for it!
