Answer: “HEIR“ CONDITIONING
(Ooh! A cool, stinky pun! Gotta love the silent H. All of today’s clue words are old favorites. Yet, all of the jumbles came up as new. As usual, I zipped through the first five like a hot knife through butter. But, when I got to my old nemesis, “casino”, I hit a wall . . . again. I couldn’t get it! I had to back into it, after getting the big answer. Fortunately, the way I checked off the letters in the answer spaces, I saw them in the CIN order that would eventually get me to “casino”. I’ve been to a few of them over my 60 plus years. I have gambled. Mostly just small time stuff. There is an electricity in the air, but there is also this over-riding feeling of desperation, that always strikes me as sad. I’m glad I don’t have the gambling bug. I did like playing the little sheets, at work, during football season. Point spreads made it more of a game for me. And, of course the box pools for the big playoff games and the Super Bowl. And, the
NCAA brackets in March. Oh, and my one friend, Tony, ran this 13 run pool during baseball season. Like the box pools, it was all fairly random. Team names pulled out of a hat. It was all as much about office camaraderie, as actually winning, which I occasionally did. It was more a matter of kismet, than going up against the house. Casinos are for people who think they know better. I know I don’t know better.
The answer letter layout was a beautiful sixteen letters long. By itself, it didn’t give anything away. A beautiful, cryptic jumble.
As usual, it was the combination of the great cartoon, and the cartoon’s dialog that made the answer a breeze for me. I hope that you all saw it as quickly as I did. I actually gave in, and turned on our air conditioner for a few hours, on Friday. Fortunately, Saturday and Sunday the temps have been more seasonal. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
