It does not make sense to hire smart people and then tell them what to do.  We hire smart people to tell us what to do.”   —   Steve Jobs

(I guess that works for “knowledge workers”.  Not so much for fish out of water workers, like me.  I graduated from college with a degree in Liberal Arts.  When I entered the world of Institutional Banking, I realized I could get by with my common sense, but I definitely required on the job training.  So, yeah.  I needed to be told what to do.  To encourage creativity, it makes more sense, to me, to say:  and then tell them what NOT to do.  But, he’s the genius, and I’m just a mouthy blogger.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Answer:  HIPSTER

(It makes perfect sense, but I wasn’t seeing it for a while!  All of the clue words are old friends, yet all of the jumbles came up as new.  The first three I saw right away, but “cnaitt” gave me some pause.  The answer letter layout was the best jumble.  It definitely gave me more than a pause!  My first instinct was something ending in IST, but I couldn’t do anything with the HREP.  If anything, it hid the word HIP . . . from me, very well!

The cartoon is great.  The dancers in the background are definitely moving their hips.  And, the trendy one has multiple attributes of a hipster.  But, I just wasn’t putting two and two together for a while.  She does have the whole vibe going on though.  Doesn’t she?  The completely inappropriate knit hat . . . in the tropics!  The big frame glasses, that may or may not be prescription.  Holding her grandé,  single origin, mocha, overpriced coffee beverage.  The funky fringed skirt, with a pocket for her cell phone.  And, something that looks like army boots!  Yeah.  She definitely screams hipster!  But, it took me some time to see it.  Maybe I was just tired?  Hmm.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

CollTales

But Why Didn’t They
Call it The Big Pizza?

The world would laugh, if it’d even care, about the little idiosyncrasies New Yorkers seem to invest themselves with so much passion one would think that the fate of humankind is squarely pinned on them. Case in point: pizza, local fast food extraordinaire.
Now, we know, would it kill us to exercise restrain and abstain from such prosaic subject? We’re not above it, though; yesterday, when we were cold and short of cash, it seemed like a good idea. But fear not, for we approach the beast with utmost respect.
For even for pizza there’s a certain way of eating it, if far from solemn, that denizens of this great cesspool are proud of mastering early on. And then there’re all the wrong ways to be ashamed doing it. Just ask the Mayor, who was caught eating the holy dough…

Visual Description:  U2 . . . when they were brand new!

WLONIF  =  INFLOW,  SIYMDA  =  DISMAY,  DOHWAS  =  SHADOW,  CAVIET  =  ACTIVE,  MURSEM  =  SUMMER,  SMECUL  =  MUSCLE   —   Giving us:  INFDASHAAEMMEMLE

Clue/Question:  In the late ’70s, Paul David Hewson started going by Bono and – – –

Pre-Answer:  Five Words  (4-letters)  (1-letter)  (4-letters)  FOR  (7-letters)

Image result for early U2

Answer:  MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF

(Ooh.  A bit of a sneaky one!  I was initially thinking the answer was going to be something specific to U2, like one of their early, better known, song titles.  It’s funny seeing them so young!  They’re all a few years younger than yer Uncle, but in his mind’s eye HE is younger than them!  Just semi-delusional.

We have yet another new clue word today, in “inflow”!  The big boss-man, ralis95, will have to – once again – update his world famous clue word database.  The other five clue words were old friends.  Five of the six jumbles appear to be new, with “mursem” having definitely been used before.  I must have been in the groove this morning, because they all came to me, right away.  The answer letter layout was a well thought out jumble.  Not obvious, in any way.

I guess I have to face facts, and admit that a scene from the late ’70s makes for a great period piece!  A nice likeness of the Edge’s guitar.  I also like the cap in his other hand.  And, Adam with his bass, and Larry with his sticks.  I also like the old-style corded microphone on the floor.  Today they’re all cordless.  A nice walk down memory lane.  And, a fine offering by the guys.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Fossil fuel folly.

PIOHP  =  HIPPO,  NTIHN  =  NINTH,  RENVIT  =  INVERT,  ETRTLE  =  LETTER   —   Giving us:  IPPNIHINELETE

Clue/Question:  The oil company was behind schedule because of too many projects – – –

Answer:  IN THE PIPELINE

(Maybe not a stinky pun, but certainly a stinky business!  It’s one of those Jumbles where they are clearly showing something in the cartoon, but working overtime not to use a certain word.  And, speaking of a certain word, can it be true that we’ve never had “hippo” before.  I actually did struggle with the jumble for a few seconds.  But, when the word came to me it looked like an old favorite.  I can’t find it on the world famous ralis95 clue word database, so I guess the big boss-man is going to have make another addition to it.  We’ve definitely seen “ntihn” before, and “etrtle” made me look a couple of times before I saw the “letter”.

The answer letter layout was an impressive 13-letter jumble.  But, the leading nature of the clue/question, and the cartoon, made it a very easy solve for me.  For those of you who aren’t all that much into the visual clues I suppose this could have been harder for you.

The cartoon is great.  It uses the popular stereotype of big oilmen being cowboys.  And, there is absolutely no doubt that the construction guys are building a pipeline.  A fine Saturday Jumble.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Visual Description:  The shedding shredder!

FEAGF  =  GAFFE,  RNOWS  =  SWORN,  LASRWU  =  WALRUS,  ZECIRO  =  COZIER   —   Giving us:  AFESWRWRUOER

Clue/Question:  Her cat slept on her sweater, and now it was – – –

Related image

Answer:  WORSE FUR WEAR

(Ooh!  That’s a good, stinky pun!  Cat FUR and YUR.  We’re COZIER than a WALRUS, but I won’t shred your couch, or your curtains!  I’ve SWORN to give you my unadulterated opinions on puzzles and society, and occasionally I make a GAFFE, or two.  Like it or lump it, I’m the grump and the ump, who doesn’t need to stump it, or pump it.

WE HAVE A NEW CLUE WORD TODAAY!!!  Pretending to sound like Oprah.  And that clue word is “gaffe”!  Yes, our good friend, ralis95, will have to add this to his world famous clue word database.  Make no mistake about it!  And, all of today’s jumbles appear to be new.  They were all good, but not as good as the answer letter layout.  That was a wondrous jumble.  Cryptic and challenging.

The cartoon does a great job of showing life with a cat.  Despite the scratching post, it’s clear that he/she has clawed the couch.  Both the sweater and the couch cushions are covered with fur.  And, in the corner of the back room, you can see my deal breaker, the litter box!  I love kitties, but unless they can be trained to use a toilet, I can no longer be bothered with them.  A fun and furry Friday Jumble!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
