Answer:  GRATING

(Yes.  Very unpleasant, indeed.  The poor guy is barely scraping by.  All of today’s clue words are tried and true, yet all of of their jumbles appear to be new.  WordPress did not underline Gretta as being misspelled, as it is a variant of Greta.  It’s fairly rare that Hoyt uses a name as a jumble to a clue word.  The answer letter layout was a fine jumble.  Nothing obvious about it.

Grate pizza kitchen cartoon!  Woke up with my back out!  It’s hardest having to walk.  Wally is going to suffer a little.  I hope it passes soon.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

    Oooooooh, so sorry to hear about your back, Unc. I wince just thinking about it. If you can do it without very strong spasms of pain, repeated periods of gentle walking actually is one of the best things you can do, along with gentle stretching, 10-minutes-on-10-minutes-off a heating pad, warm showers, and NSAIDs (like Aleve). Minimize sitting. Avoid lifting. More than a day or two of bed rest usually makes back pain worse for longer too, so try to move even if it’s somewhat uncomfortable. If it’s not beginning to improve in a few days, consider seeing a chiropractor. ETENOEBRSFOELT [feel better soon… but you knew that].

    Went sorta fast today. I think Gretta took the longest. I figured out the answer right away.

    Sorry to hear about your back. Sometimes, when I sleep wrong, I get spasms around my back. It’s not the spine itself, it’s the torso around the sides. Though I complain it’s my back. If it’s bad enough, I’ll sleep sitting upright because it’s not comfortable in a prone position. It’s not great sitting either, but it’s not as bad.

    I think that’s my case too, Damid. I’ve had a bad back since I was going on 19. I had a slipped, and torn, disc that was giving me severe sciatica down my right leg. The torn aspect was the main cause of pain, and there was the risk of severing the spinal chord, so I had the laminectomy (following the myelogram).

    Off and on, over the years, I’ve had varying degrees of lower back issues. A PT guy gave me some great stretching exercises that help the lower back, by aligning the hips. Since the surgery, I’ve always had these knots in the muscles of my lower back, one on the right and one on the left. Those boogers are often associated with the flare ups. Usually, the stretching exercises do the trick. And, until recently, the more severe pain was concentrated on the right side of my back.

    A couple of months ago I had a flare up, and now it was more the left side of my back, and it radiated into my hip. The stretches helped, but it took 4-5 days for the pain to subside. But, it went away.

    Last week I was shoveling like a demon, and was feeling strong while doing it, with the expected soreness following. That went away with the stretches. But, after a hectic weekend, I woke up Monday feeling all washed out, like I was coming down with the flu, or something. But, my back was fine. Tuesday morning I woke up with the re-occurence of the pain on my left side! Lower back, hip, and even pains in my thigh and calf. I could only walk Wally part way down the block, and I’d have to stop and go down to a squat, to relieve the pain. Then I’d walk 10-15 paces and have to repeat the squat.

    I actually feel best when I’m sitting. The more erect I stand, the worse the pain. I’ve also noticed a little weakness in my left leg, especially on stairs. I have an appointment with an Ortho guy tomorrow. Maybe it’s some kind of pinched nerve. I guess I’ll find out. With my luck the pains will disappear when I’m trying to tell the doc about them, then come back when I get home.

    Yeah that history sounds like pinched nerve/sciatica all right. That’s great that you can sit relatively comfortably. Most can’t. One time I had it, the only position I could be comfortable in for a couple days until the Medrol Dose-Pak did its thing was lying face down. Continued best wishes.
