(Izaak Walton would love this one!  Let’s add this Jumble to “The Compleat Angler”!  I used to fish as a boy.  It was great fun.  Caught mostly creek chub, rock bass, sunfish, the occasional carp and bullheads.  I’ve even caught a couple of smallmouth bass, and one trout.  Always catch and release.  As an adult, I tried to take one of my step-sons fishing once.  Zilch.  Nada.  Ungatz!  I think I lost my touch.  Maybe, I’ll try again someday.

No new clue words today, but all of the jumbles came up as new.  I thought “zoicre” was a great jumble.  The answer letter layout was nifty too.  The avoidance of the word FISH set the hook, for me.  I’m guessing Jeff knows the “skilled angler”.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Yep. That angler is Eric Reaves. Former Guest Jumbler, cartoonist for Hi and Lois and fellow Hoosier. He likes his fly fishing.

Puzzles with bonus answers that use made-up/misspelled words are definitely harder for me. I immediately “angled” in on FISH as well and since it “sounds” more like the middle of a word than the end, I figured it was most likely the middle syllable.

But it still took me over another minute to work out the other two syllables, which I usually will not need if the bonus answer is a real word. Longer words (even if “proficient” had been spelled correctly) can be trickier to unscramble as well if the clue doesn’t immediately give it away, because we don’t get as much practice with them in Jumble.

Now, now, David. The answer IS a a real word, phonetically speaking. There was just some pun-etic (okay, not a real word) licensing of the spelling! That’s the main reason you occasionally see the guys use quotation marks with these kind of answers. I’m a little surprised you didn’t point out the tie-ins of “gifted” and “skilled” to the PRO (portion) of the answer! FISH wasn’t the only part of the pun.

Thanks for the inside scoop, Jumble Jeff! I just love the pun, but I have to admit my knowledge of angling is strictly super FISH-ial …

Right, right, I did miss that punny connection specifically to PRO- (though I did get the clue’s overall connection to “proficient”). In solving it I actually came up with the -IENT ending before I finally found PRO-. Yeah PRO’s a prefix that should have occurred to me on a couple of levels, but nope. It’s a weak spot in my Jumble solving and makes these harder for me. It’s like my mind walls off misspellings instead of seeing them as possibilities… even with the quotes.

Also anagrams to “pre-fish-tion”! Not so close to perfection, but close?

Hey, we all have our little blind spots, David. I have a hard time unjumbling words that I don’t like. I eventually get them – usually by having to back into them – but it’s a mental thing with me as well. Maybe, we just need to loosen up! — YUR

Woah! I hope this was just an additional observation, and not your answer for today, Sara H. LOL!

Some deep thinking here! I’m always happy to get the words unjumbled! What a jumble!!

And I, too, appreciate the inside info J-Jeff! And, of course, our Unc figured it out!!

    Hey! LL
