“When are you going to realize that if it doesn’t apply to me it doesn’t matter?” — Murphy Brown
(I’m not 100% positive, but I think this might be the first quote from a television character, instead of from an actual person, or an author’s line from a book. Can any of you guys remember a quote from a television character? It’s an amusing quip, from an amusing show, but it seems a little unusual to me. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
I think this *is* a first, UR, a quote attributed to a fictional character instead of the author/screenwriter who created her/him. Scholars are careful to put words in the mouth of the character, not the author; Lady Macbeth said, “Out, damned spot!,” while Shakespeare wrote it. On the other hand, does anybody know who wrote lines for Murphy Brown???
How about a quote from a movie character ?
One of my favorites, Gordon Gekko’s quote in the movie “Wall Street”.
“Greed is good!”
That pretty much sums up the current state of our economy and our politics. Anytime our lawmakers pass laws that allow industries to take advantage of us, you can bet some big campaign contributions went into somebodies’ pockets.
How about one more of my favorites, the prison warden in “Cool Hand Luke” ? “What we have here is a failure to communicate.”
That pretty much explains every problem I’ve ever had.
