Jumble Spoiler – 01/18/17

Clue/Question:  He remembered inventing the “DRAM” computer chip in 1968 because it was – – –

Answer:  MEMORABLE

(Actually – according to Wikipedia – the Dynamic Random-Access Memory, aka DRAM, chip was “invented” in 1966, by Dr. Robert Dennard, and it was PATENTED in 1968.  But, I do have to say that Jeff did a wonderful job of capturing the good doctor’s likeness!  Dr. Dennard’s invention really set the stage for modern computing.  I bet there is an interesting story behind how the guys got the inspiration for today’s Jumble.  It’s certainly not based on an old saw, like most of the Jumbles are.  Maybe, the good doctor is a fan of the Jumble?

There were no new clue words today, however all of the jumbles did come up as new.  I thought that “merakb” was pretty challenging.  For a few seconds I thought I might have to back into it.  I skipped it to get “remove”, but saw “embark” when I returned to it.  The answer letter layout made for another fine jumble.  With the combination of the cartoon’s dialog, the leading nature of the clue/question, and my rudimentary knowledge of computers, the answer came to me quickly.  I like how the cartoon shows a desktop computer in the background, and the little kid is computing on his cell phone.  And, I’m guessing that that’s some kind of computer chip on Gramp’s mug.  Fine cartoon and fine Jumble.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
