Cryptoquote Spoiler – 11/25/16

Try to keep your soul young and quivering right up to old age.”   —   George Sand

(Again, I was forced to solve this without benefit of newspaper or printout.  But, I managed.  Figuring out that the author was George something was a big help.  The only words that I had to write out, with some _ _s, were “soul” and “quivering”, and the author’s last name.  But, I quickly saw that.  This appears to be the first George Sand quote since I’ve been posting the spoilers . . . unless I just neglected to Tag her.  It’s a very vivid quote.  I really like it.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Clue/Question:  The railroad sold off their older surplus boxcars because they were – – –

Answer:  EXTRAINEOUS

(Excellent pun, and a great Jumble!  None of today’s clue words are new, but three of the jumbles are.  We’ve seen “tinyu” before.  Hoyt’s answer letter layout is a masterpiece of a jumble.  Because of the UN, standing out near the middle, I thought that the first two letters of the answer was going to be UN.  Fortunately, I didn’t spend any time on that misguided/misdirected notion.  Then I was seeing the word EXTRA, and thought it was the five letter, center portion, of the answer.  I wasn’t even seeing the word TRAIN at that point.  But as I under-hashed the EXTRA letters, I was left with SUNOIE, and I knew I couldn’t do anything with that.  So, I looked at the cartoon and clue/question for the word they were trying hard NOT to use, and I realized it was TRAIN, and then I saw the pun.  Funny how EXTRA does come up in the answer anyway!  Just broken up a little.  I’m working with the reduced-sized cartoon, but I can see that Jeff did a great job with it.  Especially the graffiti DAVE and JEFF on the boxcars in the background.  Lots of fun.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Answer:  GOBBLE GOBBLE

(Nice, holiday appropriate pun!  I didn’t need a pen to do this one.  All of the clue words are old favorites, and one of the jumbles, “sobbar”, has been used before.  The answer letter layout was swell, but with four repeating letters, it really didn’t present much of a challenge.  But, today isn’t about mental challenges.  It’s about giving thanks.  Hopefully, you all – like me – can find many things to be thankful for.  Life is good.  Happy Thanksgiving, folks!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

He who thanks but with the lips, thanks but in part; the full, the true thanksgiving comes from the heart.”   —   J. A. Shedd

(Happy Thanksgiving to all of our readers!  This appears to be the first J. A. Shedd quote, since I’ve been posting these spoilers.  This wasn’t easy for me, because my Mom’s newspaper doesn’t carry the Cryptoquote, and her printer is out of ink/toner!  I had to do it by sight alone.  The words “lips”, “part”, “full” and “true” took a little thought!  And, I had to guess with the author.  Thankfully, Google could confirm it for me.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Beware of monotony; it’s the mother of all the deadly sins.”   —   Edith Wharton

(I kind of figured out the author first.  Which helped me realize that the last word wasn’t SIPS!  I guess “monotony” is the eighth deadly sin!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Clue/Question:  The rodent who lived in the big city was growing tired of the – – –

Image result for city rats

Answer:  RAT RACE

(I think this is a well worn Jumble theme.  Almost a Junior Jumble in its ease.  All of the clue words are old favorites, even though it’s been a while since we’ve seen “forage”.  Three of the jumbles came up as new, with “faret” having been used previously.  That jumble gave me pause for a couple of seconds.  It’s a good one.  The answer letter layout was a great jumble, but like I said, the answer wasn’t very tough.  The cartoon, however, is classic!  Really beautifully drawn, with lots of detail.  I especially like the fat rat by the garbage can, with the chicken bone in his hand.  Lots of fun.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Image result for brownies

Answer:  BROWNIE POINTS

(Sweet pun!  I love brownies, especially if they’re not too cakey.  They’re better when they’re dense and moist.  And, I don’t like frosted brownies.  Well, maybe it depends on the frosting.  A little drizzled chocolate, or powdered sugar is fine too.  But, I do like when they have chocolate chips in them.  Mmm!  No new clue words, but three of the jumbles are new today.  They’ve definitely used “heliw” before.  This jumble always makes me think of Julia Child for some reason.  All the jumbles came to me immediately today.  The answer letter layout was great, but the answer was very obvious to me.  Probably because of the great cartoon, and the clue/question.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I may be wearing makeup, but I can throw a fastball by you at the same time.”   —   Jennie Finch

(My – sexist – bad!  I thought it was Dennie Finch.  Hey, I don’t mind a guy wearing makeup!  To my surprise, she is a very attractive, and very talented, World Series and Olympic Gold Medal winning, former softball player.  She is now “retired” and is busy raising her two sons and a daughter, while occasionally doing color analyst work for ESPN.  I guess even chauvinists like me can learn something new every day.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Answer:  DEAL WITH IT

(Not bad!  But of course, I’m kinda immune to stinky puns.  None of the clue words were new, but three of the jumbles appear to be new.  We’ve definitely seen “tahew” some time in the past.  The answer letter layout did not give anything away.  It was actually a very good jumble.  The cartoon is fun.  I guess Gizmo isn’t a fan of cigar smoke.  Either that, or he was tired of always being left out of the game.  It’s funny how guys who normally don’t smoke – anything – will smoke cigars when it comes to playing poker.  It’s like it’s not officially a guys’ night out unless there’s cigar smoking.  Who says men aren’t complicated?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
