TUCEA = ACUTE, VEIRR = RIVER, BHGITL = BLIGHT, LEDILA = ALLIED — Giving us: AERBLTIE
Clue/Question: After gaining independence from Britain, their favorite beverage was – – –

Answer: “LIBER–TEA“
(An aromatic, patriotic pun! Happy Fourth, everybody! David L. Hoyt has given us yet another new clue word, in “allied”. I’m not sure if ralis95 works holidays, but hopefully he’ll see this and add this to his world famous clue word database. I struggled to get the word. I have very little patience these days, so I backed into it. The jumble for “blight” is new, but the other two have been previously used. The answer letter layout gave nothing away. You just knew the second part of the answer was going to be TEA, and there weren’t enough spaces – or an H – for HERBAL, so the more appropriate LIBER became very obvious. The cartoon is great! I’m saying the first guy is John Adams, although I suppose he could be George Washington. But, the middle guy is definitely Thomas Jefferson, and the third guy is Benjamin Franklin. Have a safe, and respectful, Fourth of July, people! Be well and do good.) — YUR
