Answer:  REEL ‘EM IN

(Oooh!  Bright and shiny, with lights and bells, and other cool sounds!  And, an outside chance that you could possibly, maybe, come out ahead!  Do you know what the casino manager is really saying?  He’s saying:  Do you smell that?  It’s desperation, son.  Nothing else in the world smells like that.  I love the smell of desperation in the morning . . . afternoon, evening and night – they can’t tell what time it is, because there are no windows or clocks.  It smells like victory . . . for us!

No new clue words today.  However, all of the jumbles did come up as new.  Great jumbles!  And the answer letter layout was the best jumble of all.  Nothing given away . . . at all.  And, I wouldn’t be surprised if today’s pun escaped some of you.  The apostrophe and two-letter box was surely a big help, but the fishing aspect had to be a little abstract to some of you.  Top-notch cartoon, featuring cameos from our two pals and their wives.  The boss-man looks a little like Steve Wynn!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Hello from San Francisco where we’re playing GIANT WORD WINDER and GIANT MATH WINDER with kids in partnership with the San Fran Public Libraries. I just thought I’d check in to say hi and to let you know that a few people e-mailed me about not being certain about today’s pun…REEL ‘EM IN. Slot machines use reels, in that the symbols spin on reels. The classic slots machines are 3-reel slot machines, but there are also 4-reel and 5-reel slot machines. Even video slots machines refer to the way they spin as 3-reel, 4-reel, 5-reel, etc. The slot machine reels are the basis for today’s play on words. I think there were some people who didn’t know this based on a couple of the e-mails I received. Thanks!

AND . . . you gotta be a real “sucker” – a bottom feeding fish – to play these machines, and really think you’re going to win! So sayeth yer uncle. — YUR

VENUE took me the longest. I did pick up on the ‘Reel’ as part of the slot machines. But I wasn’t sure that’s what they were called; I was thinking Wheels. Though that wasn’t the answer word; I was looking deeper at that part of a cartoon clue.

Sometimes, HOW you get somewhere is completely secondary to the getting there, Dmw!

Slots definitely use REELS, but the same answer would have been just as good on a fishing-theme cartoon (for Father’s Day, get it?) …

Thanks, David, for the explanation! I didn’t know about the reels on slot machines. I had no problem with the Jumble, though. The words were instant. For the final answer, I knew that the second word was ‘EM. I initially thought that the first word was LINE but then I couldn’t come up with a reasonable third word. At that point, REEL ‘EM IN just occurred to me, although I didn’t get the pun.
