Visual Description: Funnies illustrators’ road trip.
BETAA = ABATE, TUCOS = SCOUT, REQUSA = SQUARE, TTNNIE = INTENT Giving us: ATESCUSRINT
Clue/Question: When the comic strip creators sang on the way to their annual get-together, they were – – –
Answer: “CAR–TUNE–ISTS“
(I think there was kind of a double omission/misdirection going on with today’s Jumble. They used “creators”, instead of artists, in the clue/question, because they didn’t want to give away the ISTS portion of the answer. And of course, they had to go with “comic strip” over cartoon. Initially, I bit on the “creator” aspect, and was trying to use the words ART or ARTIST. It didn’t take me long to change horses though. From ARTIST I picked up on the ISTS, and that they were singing in a CAR. That’s when the pun sank in! For me, this was a little more difficult than yesterdays. How about you guys?
All the clue words were old favorites, but all the jumbles came up as new. I saw “abate” and “scout” immediately, but I had to think a few seconds on both “square” and “intent”! The answer letter layout was another masterful jumble. Nothing about it gave anything away. Very personal, and fun cartoon. Hopefully, Jeff will grace us with the who’s who! Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

Brilliant Jumble, and the first one I gave up on this year! I tried for 15 minutes and couldn’t solve it. After seeing the answer, I realized I was nowhere near, either, so no regrets. SQUARE took me a couple of second and INTENT took a little bit longer. Certainly the toughest one of the year for me. I totally didn’t think of the CAR aspect or ISTS. I was thinking more along the lines of SARCASTIC, so was looking for words ending in STIC. When that didn’t work, I tried IANS and IANT for the last part. No success. I also tried S-TATE as the last 5 letters. This was obviously a stretch, but the mention of Tennessee and Mississippi took me there.
Definitely not the intuitive frame-and-caption like we got yesterday! I, too, started with ART, and then tried to end with –IANS, and finally (a rarity for me) had to take out a pen, jot down the letters and rearrange them on paper before I settled on the answer. Nothing given away today! At least we know what those car-tune-ists are singing …
This is shaping up to be one of the bigger weekend stumpers! It’s still early, and it IS part of a holiday weekend, where plenty of people are enjoying outside activities, as opposed to word games, but we are already well north of 3100 queries! I thought today’s was tough, and it’s looking like most people agree.

I had a hard time with “INTENT” but I figured out the “CAR-TUNE” part of the final puzzle. So crossing out those letters left me with “ISTS”
Sorry for the delay. I just got back from Memphis. Those “CAR–TUNE–ISTS“ were this year’s nominees for the Reuben Award for cartoonist on the year. From the driver clockwise: Hilary Price (Ryhmes with Orange), Lynda Barry (Ernie Pook’s Comeek), Mark Tatulli (Lio, Heart of the City), Michael Ramirez (Editorial cartoonist) and Stephan Pastis (Pearls Before Swine, Timmy Failure). And the winner is…..Michael Ramirez!
Awesome! Congrats, to Michael for winning, and to all who were nominated!
I bet you had a great rip!
