LOVAC = VOCAL, RUFIT = FRUIT, XOESPE = EXPOSE, BRYATE = BETRAY — Giving us: OCLFRUESEBRAY
Clue/Question: What she told her husband before handing him the orthodontist’s bill.
Answer: BRACE YOURSELF
(This one threw me for a few seconds! There were no new clue words today, but every single jumble came up as new. I wasn’t seeing “betray”, and without the “BRAY” I wasn’t seeing the answer in the answer letter layout, so I couldn’t back into “betray”. I thought I was going to have to try out a slew of letter combinations, so I went to the reading room . . . to concentrate. Even before picking up the paper again I just saw the word BETRAY in my head. Sometimes you just have to look away for the tougher ones to come to you! The answer letter layout was a work of art though! Nice domestic, sitcom-ish cartoon. Oral health is extremely important, but I think they push orthodontics a little too hard in this country. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

One of the toughest of the year! I had a lot of trouble with VOCAL (it was, and continues to be, in my “tougher words” list) and BETRAY (it was in my “toughest words” list but has been downgraded to “tougher words” :-)). The final answer letter layout was really cryptic and for the longest time I was getting nowhere. I tried YOURS and FORCE for the first word, but nothing sensible followed for the second word. After about 2 minutes, BRACE YOURSELF just occurred to me. I got lucky on this one. I did think about giving up when I was nearing the 2 minute mark. Glad I didn’t!
