The Supreme & Supremo Courts, Colltales

Citizens United, the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling that political spending is a form of protected free speech, has not only flooded American politics with corporate money, but it’s also assigned the judiciary with a clear ideological bias.
Similarly, the same branch of government has been given an oversized role in Brazil’s current political crisis. The difficult circumstances trapping the presidents of both countries are matched only by two painfully self-serving legislative classes.
While President Obama’s leaves office within a year, President Dilma Rousseff may be forced out even before that. Such limits, along with inefficient congresses, grant legal courts in both sides of the Equator a unique, and extra, charge of power.
To their constitutional role of interpreting the law, judges are being asked to reflect society’s rifts too, as exemplified by recent decisions split along partisan lines. Developments in both countries have only…

Visual Description:  Snakes on a plain?

CATRT  =  TRACT,  GLITH  =  LIGHT,  NETYRD  =  TRENDY,  DIMMUE  =  MEDIUM   —   Giving us:  TATLHTTREMEDI

Clue/Question:  When the hikers came across the poisonous snake on the trail – – –

Answer:  IT RATTLED THEM

(Wow!  A nice, long, punny answer!  There were no new clue words today, however three of the four jumbles came up as new.  The only one we’ve definitely seen before is the only one that gave me any trouble.  And that was “dimmue”.  I had to back into it.  Actually, I chose to back into it.  I’m a little lazy these days.  If I don’t get a clue word after a few looks I go on to the next one, and then the big answer.  Of course, this only works when the answer is not terribly tough, like today’s.  The cartoon snake is clearly a rattler, but they were very careful to dance around that by calling it a “poisonous snake”.  And of course, it’s very wise to carefully dance around a rattle snake.  The answer letter layout was tremendous.  It didn’t give anything away.  No, it was the great cartoon, and the set up of the clue/question that made the answer unmissable for me.  Be well and do good, friends.  Stay away from those rattle snakes!)   —   YUR

Labor to keep alive in your breast that little spark of celestial fire called conscience.”   —   George Washington

(A message for today’s Presidential candidates???  Well, not Bernie Sanders, of course.  His entire candidacy is based on conscience.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
