Visual Description:  Conflicting plans?

CRIPE  =  PRICE,  GANTY  =  TANGY,  SWOMID  =  WISDOM,  HESKNA  =  SHAKEN   —   Giving us:  PRETGYWIOSAN

Clue/Question:  He was hoping his mother-in-law would be leaving today, but she had – – –

A battle axe

Answer:  HIM BY THE BALLS?  No, it’s:  STAYING POWER

(I struggled mightily – for me – to get today’s answer.  I was nearly going to ask you guys for help.  I stopped trying and moved on to the Cryptoquote, and then came back to it.  I found the clue words very easily.  None of them are new, though three of the jumbles are new.  We have seen “cripe” before.  Add an S and you get cripes!  A euphemism for Christ.  The answer letter layout was very cryptic, and a great jumble.  It definitely did not help me in getting the answer.  I didn’t find anything really leading in the clue/question, or the cartoon’s dialog.  I kept looking at the lounger/recliner and the old battle axe’s slippers, versus the suitcase, but I wasn’t putting it all together.  I was initially thinking something along the lines of OTHER PLANS, but there were too many letters, and no H or L.  I finally decided the first word probably ended with ING, but it still wasn’t jumping off the page at me.  Then, the opposite of leaving finally sank in, and  . . . well, you know.  I guess it coulda been just me.  You know, maybe it was time for me to pack it in?  Did many of you guys struggle to solve this?  Be well and do good, friends.)    —   YUR

YUR, we same to have followed an almost identical path today! I initially thought of OTHER PLANS, then decided that the first word ended in ING without getting anywhere, tried PARTING for the first word but couldn’t find a reasonable second word, tried ANOTHER for the first word but some of the letters weren’t there and then (after about 3 minutes) realized that STAYING was the opposite of leaving and voila – solved the jumble. The clue words were very easy. I needed a couple of seconds for WISDOM but the rest were instant.

I thought of giving up. Glad I didn’t, and glad that I am not the only one who found this tough! Certainly the toughest all year from my point of view, although in hindsight the cartoon had a great clue and I should have thought of STAYING earlier.

Unc, I too expected the second word to be PLANS or IDEAS. However, I isolated the -ING, and then it fairly well fell into place. But it was a bit of misdirection.

For your survey: I had no problem getting the answer (unlike yesterday, which flummoxed me), but couldn’t get WISDOM – just couldn’t see it.

My first guess was also OTHER PLANS. Walked away from it for awhile and my wife came up with STAYING…the remaining letters gave us POWER.

My word. This was a bugger! I had the husband check my unjumbled clue letters to make sure I had not dyslexisized them. Nope, no issue there. I was going for parent something, senior something. I had a whole page of words that didn’t work. I was all over the place. Then I wrote all of the clue letters backward and immediately saw power. Staying Power! Awesome guys.

UNC, when the husband saw your crossed out answer, I thought I was going to have to give him oxygen.

It took me to this morning to get through Sunday’s jumbler. I’m actually still caught up. jumbled life is good. LL

Very tough solve for me. Finally got it, but whew. Initially thought of ‘mother plans’, but of course, that wasn’t correct! Give ‘the guyz’ get extra points for today’s Jumble! PS, UR, the first answer you crossed out is really funny! -jenn

Mother plans was a smart guess, Jenn! Writing the letters backwards is a great idea, Linda! I should try that if I am stuck.

Add another to the OTHER PLANS guess. But that went by the wayside when there’s no L in any of the words…..
