Clue/Question: Her husband struggled with his diet for years. She loved him – – –
Answer: THROUGH THICK AND THIN
(Meh. No new clue words, and I didn’t struggle with a single jumble. Nothing wrong with the answer letter layout, except that it was so heavy with Ts and Hs that it was nearly impossible to hide what became a fairly obvious answer. The cartoon does a fine job of setting up the gag. Our hero is thin in the photos on the wall above his medal and trophy, but considerably thicker in the flesh. Did most of you find today’s Jumble as easy as I did? Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR
PS. I’m not blaming bacon for our collective obesity. I think the bigger problem is cheese. Sources vary, but on average, Americans consume between 23 and 31 pounds of cheese each year, which is triple the amount consumed in the 1970s. Many European countries have always consumed more cheese than Americans, but they aren’t consuming it with french fries, hamburgers, and other high fat content fried foods, like we do. Most fast food restaurants don’t even offer a regular hamburger these days, and if they do it’s only their smallest burger available. You can order the larger burger sandwiches, and ask for No Cheese, please. But, guess what? You pay the same price! They used to offer a regular hamburger for one price, and then the cheeseburger for like 10¢ more. Sure, they probably price more than 10¢ into their burger sandwiches now, and that is part of the problem. The cheese-less burger is only available, for those who are fat and calorie conscious, or lactose intolerant, but you still are paying for the cheese you are trying to avoid! It’s a racket and a ripoff! The same thing applies to most of their breakfast sandwiches. The fast food companies are getting fatter . . . by making all of us fatter. There should be a consumer advocacy group out there looking into/fighting this. I like cheese as much as the next guy, but why should you or I pay more for wanting and getting less? — YUR
