“The best helping hand that you will ever receive is the one at the end of your own arm.” — Fred Dehner
(This guy either died in 1978 – at age 70 – or he’s currently alive, but doesn’t have any bio info out there for us. Either way, this is the one and only quote attributed to him. Here’s a question for the Grammar Police: Are double possessives as objectionable as double negatives??? What arm might your hand be connected, if not your own? It’s like: at the present time. Or: cash money. The unnecessary redundancy is irksome. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

It is slightly redundant, Unc Rave, but “own” is frequently used for emphasis, as in, “I saw it with my own two eyes” or “Learn to stand on your own two feet.” Right up there with your faves “cash money” and “present time,” is mine, “past history.” All cash is money, all history is past, and people are going to keep on muttering redundancies into the upcoming future…oops!
You’re a riot, hal! I’m also getting tired of some of these commercials. Flonase has taught me that: “Six is greater than one!” Wow. Go figure! And there is some hospital out of Westchester County that advertises: “Not just one of a kind, but the only one of its kind!” I guess they think they are *very unique*!
