( . . . it’s a DOOZY! Hey, there! We have a new addition to the ralis95 clue word database, in “doozy”. That’s a fun word, isn’t it? I have no idea where it came from. German? French? It’s probably a corruption of a word from another language. A couple of the other jumbles appear to be new. We’ve definitely seen “legfun” before. I could do with a little legfun. The answer letter layout was good, for such a short answer. The cartoon is great, with the male tourist in shorts, and a goofy hat. I guess that’s it for today, folks. Be well and do good, friends.) — YUR

I had always heard that DOOZY was a diminutive of DUESENBERG, an extremely impressive and high-end car of the 1920s and ’30s. Anything that had a wow factor was a doozy. However, an extremely thorough English researcher thinks the phrase predated automobiles, and actually started out as DAISY, which originally meant not just a plain old wildflower. Mr. Quinion is somewhat protective of his work product, but I think it’s “fair use” to give the link to one of his entries:

I had heard the Duesenberg explanation once before, a long time ago, but had forgotten it, hal. It was a pretty splendid car. I hadn’t heard the daisy/Ms. Dusey angle before, though. Thanks for the source!
