(Because of the – what I thought was the intentional – omission of the word “mask” I was trying to come up with a mask related answer.  I was also thinking of something along the lines of a nightmare related answer, but none of the letters jumped out at me.  Actually, the word JUMP did kind of jump out at me, and I thought it might be the first word, but I couldn’t do anything with OTDREONG.  Clearly, the guy – the dad? – did show poor judgment . . . and he’s liable to end up poor because of it, but the cartoon was kind of misleading , to me.  Finally, the word “broke” in the Clue/Question led me to “poor”, and then I figured out “judgment”.  Very good answer letter layout, by the way!  We haven’t seen “joist” in a while, or “oblong” for that matter.  I love the cartoon, but for me it was more of a distraction than an aide, in solving the answer.  Did any of you guys have problems similar to mine???  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

I was thinking along the lines of a dream catcher in the answer, due to the dad saying it took away their bad dreams…I was obviously wrong-o! I’m surprised I finally did get the answer. It used up all my remaining brain cells for the day. Ps, the masks are creepy!

Thanks for the post. I kept trying different things with “Jump” and “Nightmare” (not all letters were there, though).

I got this one pretty quickly, but I just didn’t see any joke in it! Turns out I didn’t notice the “poor” / “broke” word play.

I saw poor — but carried over a “O” to the other word. Saw my error, and could not solve the rest until I decided to see if judgement did not have 2 Es. It does not. My spelling is getting worse and worse! A great stumper!

Usually, the word play is more elucidated by the cartoon. I could see how the whole thing worked, but I just felt the cartoon was going in another direction. It’s fine with me though. I don’t like my puzzles to be overly obvious. It’s one of the reasons why I don’t like what I call the *bonus clues*. The guys put this puzzle out for a broader audience than guys who like to THINK that they’re experts.

Same problem as many of the others … the clue didn’t seem to lead to the answer. I finally gave up and found this site so I can at least sleep at night, now. Better to know than spend the rest of my life wondering! Kudos to those who did figure it out.

I figured it out but dont understand why JUDGEMENT was spelled without the second E. ????

  12. 12 unclerave March 25, 2016 at 8:23 pm

It looks like the single E version is the more accepted one, Max. The 2 E version comes up as “variant”, although not archaic. English is an inexact language. — YUR
