    I think what Rousseau means is that finding activities to occupy time will necessarily keep us from thinking and, therefore from developing as rational beings. If all of society chose not to think and only act, that would certainly be a problem. He compares this to loneliness and how people seek to find things to do so as not to think about how lonely they are, An idle mind…as the saying goes.

    Rousseau found time to father five children, none of whom he acknowledged and who were assigned to orphanages. Philosophers often have difficulty with responsibility.
