(Long) Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 08/19/12

English: The Buffet Deutsch: Das Buffet

Visual Description:  A buffet gourmand’s million excuses for being super-sized.

SHOCOY  =  CHOOSY,  SALVIH  =  LAVISH,  UWATOL  =  OUTLAW,  NACCEH  =  CHANCE,  SSMYTE  =  SYSTEM,  CITPED  =  DEPICT   —   Giving us:  HOOLAIOUHNCSTMEPT

Clue/Question:  He wanted to start going to the gym, but he had . . .

Answer:  TOO MUCH ON HIS PLATE

(Wow!  A 17 letter answer!  That is pretty big.  I wonder what the record is?  When I first saw the answer letter layout, and read the dialog and the clue/question, I thought that I was going to have a very difficult time getting the answer.  But, then I looked very closely at Jeff’s cartoon.  I noticed the name of the place – The Hungry Heifer – on the window.  I saw that it was a buffet-style eating establishment.  But, what really stood out, for me, was what I saw on the table, in front of our dining couple.  The woman has a modest sized drink and a plate that has plenty of open spaces.  However, Mr. Excuses has a jumbo drink and a plate that is just overflowing with food.  And, even though they are both seated, you can see that the guy is fairly overweight.  Not that yer uncle can be critical, or anything.  I’m just sayin’!  Anywho, I thought all of the clue words were jumbled well.  I really like the word “lavish”  I’d love a lavish lifestyle.  And “depict” is also a great word.  I was very surprised to see that “chance” is not currently on the ralis95 clue word database.  Heads up to David L. Hoyt . . . neither is CHANGE.  The clue answer letter layout gave absolutely nothing away.  This was a very satisfying Sunday Jumble.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  What television character – and name the show, of course –  was famous for referring to The Hungry Heifer?  (There may have been a a scene from the show set there, as well.)   —   YUR

The American male doesn’t mature until he has exhausted all other possibilities.”   —   Wilfrid Sheed

(Hey!  I resemble that remark!  LOL!  Surprisingly, today I guessed right.  For me at least, it was yet another *Art Shapiro moment*, but today there were two un-obvious letters missing from the author’s name that required a certain amount of linguistic logic, and a little bit of luck.  I was not familiar with:  _IL_RID SHEED, so I wrote out all the unused letters, which were:  FGJKQVWYZ.  I’m really more familiar with Wilford and Wilfred – and Wilfredo – but I thought there was a more Germanic version of the name, and it turns out I was right.  Unfortunately, Mr. Sheed is no longer with us.  Of course, these facts had to be confirmed by Google, but whadayagonnado?!?!  This is just one way of exposing us to writers, and other people, we might not have been aware of.  There is no guarantee that I will remember this name tomorrow, but for one brief shining moment . . .  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  I thought this picture of the sleeping Prince Charles Cavalier and the tabby cat was appropriate for a lazy Sunday afternoon.  And, of course, there’s always the Aww factor.   —   YUR
