Visual Description:  Time for some antiquing!

ENDUC  =  DUNCE,  COPUH  =  POUCH,  DANDIG  =  ADDING,  SUNEER  =  ENSURE   —   Giving us:  DCEOHADNNS

Clue/Question:  All the clocks at the antique clock store were this.

Answer:  SECONDHAND

(We must have oodles of time related puns, because they’re very popular Jumble themes.  Not all clocks have second hands, nor do all watches.  They’re kind of a luxury, especially for people who don’t have the patience to wait for the minute hand to move.  The movement of the seconds hand – the more proper term – tells us, almost in an instant, that:  Yup, my watch is still working!  I can remember a time in my life when I didn’t wear a watch, and I was happy as a clam.  From how I remember it, I think I was actually better about being on time before I started wearing a watch.  And, this is WAY before people started telling time by looking at their cell phones.  If I were running late, and/or time seemed to be an imperative issue, I’d just ask someone for the time.  Most people won’t begrudge you the time of day.  Every so often I’d get the wiseguy, who just couldn’t resist saying:  Time for you to get a watch.  But, even those chuckleheads would – usually – follow up with giving me the time.  Very seldomly would someone deliver that quip and just walk away.  I’d like to think that they died from dysentery.  Ok, that’s a little harsh.  At least I hope they shart themselves, at the most inopportune moments.  My wife just adores watches and clocks.  Clocks all over the freaking house, mostly collecting dust, more than half of them not working.  I couldn’t tell you how many watches I have.  Guess who gave them to me?  I’ll generally wear one of two watches on any given day.  I’ll wear a big clunky plastic one when I’m working in the yard, and I might break out a fancy watch for a special occasion, but for me they’re just a tool.  For my wife they’re a vital accessory.  For every outfit that she envisions she has a watch in mind . . . and a necklace . . . and earrings . . . and maybe additional bracelets.  Did I mention that she also adores jewelry?  And clothes!?!?  Oh, my God!  I have one side of a walk-in closet, she has the other two.  And, she has an entire closet in another room, and she’s taken about half the closet in my daughter’s room.  We also have a hall closet – I think it’s supposed to be a second linen closet – that has nothing but her handbags.  Do you think that she likes to shop?  Sometimes I wish that I had met a simpler, more practical girl.  We would have a lot more money in the bank and a lot more room in our closets and bureaus.  But, she puts up with my crap – read into that what you will – so I guess I can’t complain.  Maybe next lifetime!

Jumble???  Wha?  Oh, yeah!  Nicely jumbled clue words.  None new.  I had a little trouble getting “ensure”.  I don’t drink that stuff . . . yet.  I actually had to back into it, because I was thinking enures, which is a recognized alternative of inures.  They might have to consider taking “ensure” off the eligible clue word list, and throw it in with the dupe/multiple list.  Not my call.  I had no beef with the answer letter layout today.  The cartoon made it pretty clear what the answer was going to be anyway.  Be well and do good friends.  Give others your time, especially children and the elderly.)   —   YUR

Oh Unc!!! Treading in sensitive territory there! I think that I have to be kin to your wife. I do love my watch collection, my purses, my jewelry….. I do like a second hand on a clock or watch. On the digital watches, I can see the seconds counting up/down. And in my bathroom the second hand helps me with my first minute of tooth brushing–the second minute ends with a buzz. So, the puzzle — I got the clues unjumbled but thought hand was hands, so I was totally stumped on the answer. I know, the number of letters was wrong, but I was seeing it totally wrong. It finally hit me when I came up with econd…OMG-second! Second Hand! And there ya go!

Hi, ya! I had trouble with only DUNCE. Figures! I haven’t worn a watch except for vacation tour excursions in over 20 years. The only time I look at the second hand is to time how long a plane takes to get off the ground. Oh, it’s approximately 40 seconds. I didn’t have trouble with ENSURE because I thought, “This has to start with a vowel because I see trouble here!!!” Summer seems to be speeding up…cooler nights…enjoy…and don’t watch the clock too much. 🙂

I had trouble with ensure too. But I was wiped out from doing yesterday’s (Sunday’s) Jumble in the same sitting. I don’t like long 1 word answers. I admit I cheated. I’m tired. Goodnight YUR. By the way, a woman can never have too many jewels, purses or clothes. Best, Betsy.

Don’t forget we can’t have too many shoes. We need them to go with all those outfits.
