Answer: _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ***FOCUS TESTING***
*** Shortly after 5:00 PM EDT (Okay folks, the contest is completed! The answer should be as above. I don’t know what “Focus Setting” would be, but if that does turn out to be the answer in tomorrow morning’s newspaper then . . . I probably shouldn’t be running this blog. This month’s co-winners are Chris and Keith, with honorable mentions to Paul and Wimpy. But, thanks to ALL who took the time and effort to write in. All you word-nerds are winners, in my book!) — YUR
(It’s been long overdue, friends! Yes, it’s time for this months edition of the Unclerave’s Wiseguy of the Day contest! Who out there has the right combination of the correct answer and an appropriate stinging barb? As always, the wisecrack can be directed towards: the answer, the cartoon, the clue words – hey, why not? – or yours truly!
It’s a twelve letter answer, of moderate difficulty. The answer letter layout is sufficiently cryptic. All the clue words are well jumbled old favorites. We’ve even had the jumble FRUIPY before! So, let’s have at it, word-nerds! If you’re having a little difficulty with it I suggest you listen to Damn the Torpedoes. Or, perhaps Moving Waves would be more to the point! Be well and do good, friends. I’ll check back later.) — YUR

Gwen,
You were the only one to acknowledge my musical references! For those of you who were scratching your heads over MY “bonus clues”, “Moving Waves” was the album name for a group named Focus. On it they had a Monster Hit with a song called “Hocus Pocus”, in the early ’70s. Mostly instrumental, with a smattering of odd vocals and some whistling. The “Damn the Torpedoes” reference is the album that featured the song “Here Comes My Girl”, by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It contains the immortal line: “Yeah, I ain’t really sure, but it seems I remember the good times Were just a little bit more in focus.” Great song, great album, great artist!
After FOCUS I didn’t imagine anyone coming up with anything other than TESTING. SETTING, while utilizing the remaining letters, doesn’t really make sense. Companies use focus groups to do focus testing.

Uhhhhhh . . . thanks(?), mickey. You must be relatively new around here. While there have been a small handful of times where I’ve been unable to come up with the answer on my own, please don’t misconstrue my untimeliness of posting the spoilers as not knowing, or needing, the answer. When I am truly stumped I will come on here and ask you guys for help. This is one of the reasons that all of your comments need to be approved, by me, before they appear on Unclerave’s. Some tried doing this in the past, just to kind of bug me/show me up. This one I’m taking as innocent exuberance.

OK, I’m late, but only a day late. I got focus testing too and totally missed the musical reference. And, as you know. I’m not usually prompt, but am trying to do better. I so check the site thought. And I did see your post regarding hanging up your pen….it makes me sad to think that could happen. I’m only a recent poster, but had been around for a while–when I needed help, but then also found out this was a fun place. But I sure understand about time–that’s why I’m usually behind, time and if I’m struggling with the puzzle. L.
You are A-OK in my book, mickey! 🙂
