PUURS = USURP, RADAW = AWARD, TTONEP = POTENT, SKINTY = STINKY — Giving us: UPWDOETI
Clue/Question: He was this after finishing his first surfing lesson.
Answer: WIPED OUT
(Gnarly, dude! Now, I’m totally stoked. Yo! It’s harder than it looks, when you don’t know what you’re doing! Like most things in life. But, what up widdat bogus skinny stick, bra??? I can dig old school, but that looks like he’s holding a striped 2″x4″. You’d have to be a Jedi-Master surfing GOD to ride that thing. Easy there, big Kahuna. JKLOL!
All the clue words jumped off the page, for me, this morning! It looks like “stinky” is going to be a new addition to the ralis95 clue word database. I like “usurp”. It’s a fairly unusual word, but it’s kind of hard to hide it in a jumble. For a short answer, especially, I thought the answer letter layout was excellent! Really primo stuff. And, of course, it’s a great cartoon. Skinny board and all! That might be one of the tiniest sinking sailboats, on the horizon, that Jeff has ever used! Be well and do good. Mahalo aloha, friends.) — YUR
PS. Feel free to nose around at my step-son’s blog, below. The boy has got mad skills, yo! — YUR

Usurp? I must have missed class that day. I have never seen that word before. Failed at trying to back into it too. Is that in the ralis95 database? Anyway, I was able to get the answer after I saw your word. Thanks for the assist! By the way, that is a funny looking surfboard-looks like a water ski! haha!
Dave,
As the old Prego commercials used to say: It’s in there! (usurp, that is)

USURP is a wonderful word, and we of the 60’s know it well. I had a hard time getting it, though. For the first time ever, I got a word without pronouncing it properly in my head, and that was AWARD. I moved around letters and finally tried A-WARD with a long A sound for the first A. Suddenly, it occurred to me that it was a short vowel A. Prize for me! Duh! Now I really want to go to Hawaii and learn to surf properly. I really don’t count my stupid middle school years at my aunt’s house in Sea Isle City, NJ trying to surf on my cousin’s long board.
If I ever make it out to Hawaii, while my step-son still lives there, I think I’ll give it a shot. He went from Little League and Hal Block soccer to BMX bike racing, then on to skateboarding. In his late 20s he got into surfing. Just in Far Rockaway, Queens. Then he took a temporary contracting job in Kauai and fell in love with REAL surfing. He also met a girl while out there. They started seeing each other, here on the mainland, then they just decided: Why don’t we try living in Hawaii? We all thought they were a little nuts, but they’ve been out there about 7 years now. Married, with a son, and he surfs every day. He’s been offered great paying jobs in NYC, but he prefers just getting by . . . and surfing.

Yes, that is a weird looking board. I tried putting into perspective because if I made it wider I wouldn’t get the surfer in the background. That teacher is the amazing Duke Kahanamoku. 5 time Olympic medalist, actor, hero, volleyball player and father of modern surfing. To surf in Waikiki=heaven.
I am such a beachbum at heart! Thanks for all the posts on surfing and Hawaii which is on the list after Cabo.
