Visual Description:  Once upon a time it was just Converse, Keds, P.F. Flyers and Red Ball Jets.

GRINB  =  BRING,  HTNTE  =  TENTH,  ROMLAT  =  MORTAL,  JUUTSN  =  UNJUST   —   Giving us:  INGENHORLNUT

Clue/Question:  He tried on the expensive pair because he thought they’d be better . . .

Answer:  IN THE LONG RUN

(Two new words for the ralis95 clue word database, today!  Both “mortal” and “unjust” are new words.  All the clue words were jumbled well, but I didn’t find any of them difficult.  The answer letter layout was very good.  Nice play on the word marathon.  Illustrative cartoon.  The answer reminds me of the Eagles song:  The Long Run.  1979.  A very good year!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Brian Wilson

Be true to your work, your word, and your friend.”   —   Henry David Thoreau

(Without the author name this would have been pretty difficult to solve.  Brian Wilson would add:  Be true to your school!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR
