It is as grandmothers that our mothers come into the fullness of their grace.”   —   Christopher Morely

A photograph of a 2 month old human infant, his mother, his maternal grandmother, and his maternal great-grandmother. Each person in this photograph gave birth to the next younger person thus showing four generations in one family photograph. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

(A beautiful line from the section on Mothers, in the Book:  Mince Pie, by Christopher Morely.  I’d like to dedicate this quote to my baby sister, who became a grandmother just last week!  Blood-wise, she is actually ahead of me, although I am the proud Grampa of three, via my handsome and talented step-sons.  I’m going to treat you guys to a link to the online-literature page on Morely’s Mothers.  I think you’ll enjoy it.  Thanks, Rebecca!  Be well and do good, friends.  Love and appreciate your moms!)   —   YUR

Jumble (Stretch) Spoiler – 03/31/12

Flag of Maryland

Visual Description:  Sitting pretty at the Chateau Oriole.

Clue/Question:  The oriole bought a manor in Baltimore, Maryland, because he was this.

Triple Crown

(Fortunately, it was fairly obvious that the second answer word was going to be BIRD.  Otherwise, this might have been pretty tough.  Of course, the Oriole is the official state bird of Maryland.  For those of you who follow horse racingand that might not be that many of you, these days – you probably know that the state flower is the Black-eyed Susan.  For those of you NOT into horse racing, the second leg of the Triple Crown, The Preakness Stakes, is held at Pimlico Racetrack, in Baltimore.  The winning horse is presented with a blanket of Black-eyed Susans.  Furthermore, a “manor” is also known as an “estate”.  The house itself could be referred to as a mansion, or manor house, or manor hall.  ESTATE BIRD is a stretchy play on words.  A true groaner of a pun!

Jeff threw in some fun detail.  A bowl of worms on the table next to the chaise lounge, and the state flag of Maryland can be made out, if you squint a bit.  I’m sure in Jeff’s proofs it’s much more defined.  The clue words were all well-jumbled.  “Dodge” is new to the ralis95 clue word database.  Moreover, the answer letter layout was beautifully cryptic.  Nothing given away.  A very nice Jumble.  Especially for a Saturday, when a good number of you are NOT busy at work . . . which is kind of bad for your unclerave.  I get my most visits during the work week.  It’s lonely here on the weekends.

That’s about it, people.  For those of you who are still following the NCAA tournament, I’m hoping for a little blue on blue in the Finals.  I’d really like to see a Battle of the Ks!  But, may the best teams win, later today!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The reason angels can fly is because they take themselves lightly.”   —   G.K. Chesterton

(One of my favorite quotable dudes!  Very often humorous, and often quite insightful.  One of my favorite quotes of his – and the regular readers should understand why – is:  “Fallacies do not cease to be fallacies because they become fashion.”  Be well, do good . . . and don’t think fashionably, friends.)   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Actress who was Mad About You . . . and the chance to be in an action film.

Clue/Question:  Helen Hunt was anxious to star in “Twister” after the script . . .

(Nice visual clues!  Trees swaying, and wind-chimes chiming, in the breeze.  Not a bad resemblance, either.  The clue words were all jumbled well.  It took me a minute or two to get “gather”.  Surprisingly, “aware” is new to the ralis95 clue word database.  The answer letter layout was nice and cryptic, as it should be.  Helen’s Mad About You co-star, Paul Reiser, turns 55 today!  Is that what prompted today’s puzzle?  Big big day for celebrity birthdays, today!  Hollywood Squares host Peter Marshall is 86, Warren Beatty is 75, Eric Clapton is 67, Robbie Coltrane is 62, Kelly Ripa‘s hubby Mark Consuelos is 41 and Nora Jones is 33!  Happy Birthday to all of them, and to all those that I missed/skipped!  Be well and do good, friends.  Stay away from tornadoes!  They’re not exactly people-friendly, ya know.  Or cow-friendly, for that matter.)   —   YUR

The Road in The Woods

The road leading to a goal does not separate you from the destination; it is essentially a part of it.”   —   Charles de Lint

(I’m sorry, but is this not the biggest DUH!-quote we’ve ever had in the Cryptoquote???  How could anything that leads you to it also separate you from it?  Any de Lint fans out there?  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

The Cheers site in Boston

The Cheers site in Boston (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Visual Description:  A subtle send up to Cheers, the early years.

Clue/Question:  When the waitress gave them the wrong cocktails, they had . . .

(Cute!  I didn’t even catch the Cheers reference until I went to post this.  Sam is tending the bar, with Norm and Cliffie firmly planted in their usual seats.  And the lovely Diane Chambers is hovering over our patrons in the foreground.  All that’s missing is Carla and Coach!  Very nice, Jeff.

No new clue words, today, but as usual they were all well-jumbled.  And, the answer letter layout gave nothing away.

This blog is a little like Cheers.  We have our regular cast of characters, some recurring guests and the occasional stragglers.  It’s “where everybody knows your name.  And we’re always glad you came.”  Be well and do good, people.)   —   YUR
