Jumble Spoiler – 12/07/11

Visual Description:  Bros befo hoes, watchin’ da show!

IMGOZ  =  GIZMO,  AETBA  =  ABATE,  GNIJEL  =  JINGLE,  SCYOKT  =  STOCKY   —   Giving us:  GIAAEINEST

Clue/Question:  Instant replay was such a hit when introduced in 1963 that people wanted to . . .

Answer:  SEE IT AGAIN

(That kid, Hoyt, has really been bringing his A game for quite a while now!  Two new clue words, again, in “gizmo” and “stocky”, but all were very well jumbled.  And, the answer letter layout was superlative.  Jeff’s cartoon and the clue/question set up the answer, perhaps a little too well.  I can’t imagine many people having a lot of trouble getting the answer, despite all the great jumbling.  For a moment, I doubted that “gizmo” was an actual word.  It always sounded more like slang.  As it turns out, Merriam-Webster’s has its first known use as being 1943, which means it probably was not included, as a recognized word, until sometime later.    1963?  I guess I just never stopped to think about it, but instant replay has been around, essentially, my entire life.  Even so, a lot of referees and umpires still can’t seem to get the call right.  Be well, do good, and measure twice to cut once!)   —    YUR

PS.  WordPress keeps ducking my requests for an explanation of the missing features:  Zemanta and font color.  Maybe it’s time to blow this taco joint, and look for greener pastures.  Anybody have any suggestions?   —   YUR

    YUR:

I remember hearing the term “Gizmo” during the war years. I seem to remember it was a term applied to anything that a soldier didn’t know the name of – something akin to “whatchamacallit” and “thingamajig.” Came into being along with “KIlroy was here.” but they had far different meanings.

GIZMO! Ha, I doubted it, also! I thought the solution was SAY IT TWICE. Then I thought it was SAY IT AGAIN. But, noooooo, I am fooled again. I was so lazy as I peddled away at the gym that I wanted to back into all the words, and my solution guesses were not working! I’m starting to think the gym is not such a good place to do the JUMBLE!

    @ ralis95,
Both “whatchamacallit” and “thingamajig” make more sense than “gizmo”. It almost looks like “gizmo” could be an acronym of some kind.

    @ Lesley,
The blood is rushing from your brain to other parts of your body. You know! Like when a guy gets an erection? You can’t be expected to think straight!
