(I can dig it!  The second part of this quotation is really humorous, and it drives home the point.  “For that reason, I am always scared and ill at ease when I enter a house in which there are no ash trays.”  Marvelous!   This was a tough one.  No 3 letter words, only one 2 letter words and one 1 letter word.  My first inkling had the second and third words as:  IS A, and then I thought HATE was HAVE.  But, I was able to straighten everything out.  Be well and do good, friends!)   —   YUR

PS.  I realize that Hatsuhana was Japanese, while Lin Yutang was Chinese, but I found this while looking up penance, to reply to Lesley’s comment, and I just couldn’t resist it.  It’s very cool!  Dig it!   —   YUR

(Beautiful tribute, guys!  We all love I Love Lucy!  All around – a great Jumble!  Clue words were all well jumbled and challenging.  “Howdy” is new to the jumble database.  The answer letter layout gave away absolutely nothing.  And, it’s a great cartoon!  Besides this momentous occasion, 11/30 is also the birthday of Mark Twain and Winston Churchill, and it’s the death-day of Oscar Wilde!  Just a few of the living celebrating birthdays today:  Efrem Zimbalist Jr. is 93, Robert Guillaume is 84, Dick Clark – used to be a forever teenager, but it all caught up with him after his stroke – is 82, Ridley Scott is 74, Roger Glover is 66, David Mamet is 64, Mandy Patinkin is 59, and Billy Idol is 56!  Happy birthday to them, and to all those I didn’t mention.  Be well and do good, my friends.)   —   YUR
