Jumble Spoiler – 11/29/11

The Family Truckster from the 1983 movie Natio...

Visual Description:  Our buddy Jeff, revisiting one of his favorite films!

CONTH  =  NOTCH,  AKYKA  =  KAYAK,  ONOLIT  =  LOTION,  VCEXON  =  CONVEX   —   Giving us:  OCAATINV

Clue/Question:  Chevy Chase worked hard on his movie career, even during his 1983 . . .

Answer:  VACATION

(Pretty much a gimme, today.  I suspect that Jeff has the hots for Beverly D’Angelo!  One of his boyhood fantasies, no doubt.  No shame in that.  She IS one fine lookin’ lady!  And, an accomplished actress/singer to boot.  And of course, the movie is a modern day comedy classic!  It looks like “kayak” is new to the Jumble world, but the jumbling wasn’t very challenging.  All the other clue words were – more or less – old standards.  Needless to say, I didn’t need to back into any of them.  The answer letter layout was fine, but the answer should have been pretty obvious to most movie buffs.  Great cartoon!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

    Hello again Unclerave —

(Did you take “The World’s Smallest Political Quiz”? [http://www.theadvocates.org/quiz] I’d love to know where you fall on that graph, if you don’t mind sharing.)

I’m new to the Jumble, and I know this is an ignorant question, but what do you mean when you say “back into” solving a clue word?

    Many thanks,

    Ken,

Personal Issues: 90% Economic Issues: 30%
Qualified me as a Liberal, drifting toward Libertarian.
Some of the questions were a little too simplistic for my taste, but there were no real surprises. For the last few years I’ve referred to myself more as a Liberal Libertarian, than simply as a Liberal. For example; I’d support a mandatory national service program, that would include a military draft option, but not a flat out mandatory military draft.

“Backing into” solving a clue word refers to getting stumped on an individual clue word, so you look at the cartoon with clue/question and look at the letters from the clue words you were able to un-jumble. Usually, you can figure out the big answer from just those things, or at least get pretty close, so now you should have a better idea what letters you still need. Knowing which letters you still need should greatly assist you in un-jumbling that stumper of a clue word. Normally, you want to un-jumble all the clue words – on there own merit – first, then look at the cartoon and the clue/question, and use all the answer letters to come up with the answer. Backing into a clue word is a minor sin, but a sin nonetheless . . . my son.

Well, then I better go to confession! I backed into almost all the words today, and I never usually do that. Lazy…
