Cryptoquote Spoiler – 11/29/11

Women's March on Versailles

Image via Wikipedia

Women aren’t trying to do too much.  There’s too much to do.”   —   Mary Kay Blakely

(I don’t know if this is paraphrased, or from a longer quotation/passage, but I couldn’t find it as a listed quote.  Looks like it was something that was run in the Los Angeles Times, back in 1989.  Fairly challenging cryptoquote, despite the help from the apostrophes.  Peace.)   —   YUR

I started with the TO and TOO, then guessed at MUCH, and the rest fell into place. Couldn’t figure out the author’s last name and ended up searching the internet for a tie to the quote. Took a bit to finally get it.

I’m not really familiar with the author, ralis. I *may* have heard the name, somewhere somehow. After all, she IS a known women’s writer. I guess you might call her a feminist, but I don’t know if that’s what she considers herself. Labels can be very tricky, so it’s probably best just to avoid them.

Anyway. We knew the author name was MARY _AY __A_E_Y. The quotation didn’t give us any Ks, Ls, or Bs, but that’s where (semi)logical assumptions come in. I suppose it could have been Mary Day, Mary Fay, Mary Gay, Mary May . . . what have you, but Mary Kay seemed the most probable to me. So, Now I had MARY KAY __AKE_Y. Seeing what letters I had already used, it seemed that the connection between the E and the Y had to be the L. The other logical possibilities had already been used. So, now I had MARY KAY _LAKELY. Again, seeing what letters I had already used, the most logical available letter to precede LAKELY, for me, was B.

This doesn’t always work out. There are some author names that defy my perception of logical probability. But, that’s how yer Uncle Rave rolls, baby!
