Clue/Question:  When the Giants leave the Big Apple for an away game, they . . .

Answer:  FLY NEW YORK JETS

(I thought that today’s was a pretty tough one.  And, I’m a Giant’s fan!  It didn’t even hit me, right away, that “jets” was going to be part of the answer.  Once I did, I thought that the other four letter word might be TAKE.  Of course that wasn’t possible with only one T available, and no A, but that didn’t hinder my delusion!  I was clever enough to see that “fly” was going to be part of it, but I couldn’t say if it was the first or second three letter word.  It wasn’t until I decided it had to be “fly” and “jets”, and then played around with the remaining letters.  But STILL, I looked at OYEWNKR and saw OWN.  But YERK was stupid!  Then I saw WORK, but then YEN and NEY made no sense.  DUH!!!  Lifelong New Yorker can’t see New York!  Oy vey!  Eventually, the light bulb came on.  I wouldn’t say I had to back in to any of the clue words, but I did stumble on “pelted”.  I started to write DEPLETE, but ran out of space.  With “renown” I doubted myself that the word didn’t need a K.  Dictionary settled that.  I knew I needed the S, and thought I needed the A – remember I was thinking TAKE – with the jumbled “pulsar”, but after deciding the word wasn’t going to end in A or S I finally came to the logical conclusion of “pulsar”.  But, by that time, I figured I’d better check its spelling in the dictionary.  Success!  For years – and years – the Jets – and their fans – were miffed about having to play in Giants Stadium.  That’s probably as good a reason as any for knocking down a perfectly good Giants Stadium and building the brand new Met-Life Stadium!  Ya know . . . just to be a real stinker, I’d bet that the New York Giants actually take a good number of New Jersey “jets”, out of Newark Liberty AirportThe team does just about everything in New Jersey!  Aay-yun-da, when they’re AWAY in Philly they probably go . . . by bus.  How ’bout dem Big Apples?!  Be well and do good, friends!)   —   YUR

My newspaper had the answers to Sunday’s Jumble almost right next to the puzzle! Stupid people! They never had answers there before, therefore, I saw COSTLY, RENOWN, and JACKAL accidentally. I must call them on that. I had to back into PULSAR. The word “ironically” helped me get the solution, and I basically had the same mind processes as you, YUR on the New Jersey ideas. I thought the remaining letters after I got FLY and JETS had something to do with Newark, NJ since I agree with your thoughts that the Giants probably fly out of Newark. I taught two of the Giants’ players kids way back in the 90’s, and got nice gifts for Christmas from them, but, alas, no tickets to a game! Ha! Great Jumble today!

There seems to be a first for everything, when it comes to newspapers these days. I’ve never had that day’s answers before, but one time with the Cryptoquote – *I know you don’t do it, but* – they left off the author! It was semi-immaterial for me, because I try not to look at the author, but still! They should get things right. Right?

I think the main problem, now, is that they pretty much operate on a skeleton crew these days. They are bleeding red ink because too many people don’t take the newspaper anymore. Only about half of the houses on my street take delivery of the paper. It’s a dying medium, thanks to the internet.

Most newspapers’ content is little better than television news these days, anyways. There are very few independent newspapers, so, like television, they all pretty much toe the corporate line. The only real benefit is you get a little better depth than television. You still have to take a lot/most of what you read with a healthy dose of salt. And that is where the internet has newspapers beat. There IS a much greater variety of viewpoints out there. You have to look for it, of course. You can’t just read Yahoo News, or MSN News, what have you. And, you can’t rely solely on “alternative” news sites. Not if you want to be fair-minded. You have to look at CBC News, The Guardian, or other countries – English version – newspaper websites to get a clearer picture of what’s really going on in the world.

NOW look what you made me do, Lesley! I drifted off on a tangent! I think my point was that I still prefer to get the newspaper! And, I wish they were more solvent and stable, and could afford things like PROOF-READERS.
