Jumble Spoiler – 11/12/11

Will ShortzVisual Description:  Will Shortz . . . taking over the Jumble?!?!

Clue/Question:  Having a crossword in the Jumble did this.

(A 13 letter answer is pretty impressive, guys!  The clue words were very common words, but they were all jumbled well.  The answer letter layout was a little suspect, but when you need a lot of Ps and a few Zs you’re pretty much stuck using “pizza”.  You could go puzzle, but then one of you clue words would be part of one of your answer words, and you’re still stuck with a PZZ.  Maybe using  jumbles of nuzzle or fizzle could have provided a ZZE.  Of course, now you’re going from a five letter clue word to a six, so you’d have to come up with one other five letter word, and . . . it gets complicated, people.  I met the guys today, up at the Mohunk Hotel in New Paltz, NY.  They were there for Will Shortz’s Wonderful World of Words.  Besides Jeff and David, I also was introduced to Will Shortz!  He has now been editing the New York Times crosswords puzzle longer than Eugene T. Maleska!  And, he’s much younger than when Mr. Maleska was doing it, so I’m sure that Will is going to set a record that will be very hard for any successor to beat.  Nice guy.  He even knew who I was – sort of – thanks to Jeff and David.  Our boys were very gracious to your old uncle, and the wife and I had a wonderful time.  I met their wives as well.  Linda and Joan, or something like that.  I stink with names theses days.  I’m getting old, kids!  I may be posting a picture or two in the coming days.  I’ll have to see how I look first.  Vanity thy name is unclerave!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

OUNCE threw me a bit, but in the end I solved everything pretty quickly! I am so jealous that you got to meet Jeff and David. I almost went up with my sista, but I was pretty much worn out from travels to FL and a sista visit this week. How was the talk and did you win an autographed Jumble?

I got to their morning session about 1/2 hour, or so, into it. And, I think most of it was geared for the folks that were staying at the hotel for the weekend’s Will Shortz’s Wonderful World of Words. I just stayed at the back and tried to take it in. I went up to them after a good number of the participants left. I actually approached Hoyt first. I tipped him off by calling him “Cuz”. He couldn’t have been nicer. He said he likes my photo. Said it looked like I was a cool kid. I’ve long been one of those hybrid-geeks! They both seemed very happy that I made it up there. They asked for you, too. The place is gorgeous. It’s like being in the Black Forest, or Austria. The place looks like a castle on a mountain lake, surrounded by beautiful white (granite?) cliffs. And you can see for miles and miles! Sorry you couldn’t get up there. It’s an annual thing, so maybe next year.

Oh, dang! I really should have driven up, but I was so tired from traveling and then driving my sista all around that I just faded. However, I am hoping that the guys are traveling in PA, NJ, or NY in the future! My sista has been to the Mohonk House many times to hike and high tea. It looks amazing! Jeff and David asked for me??? Wow! These famous guys are so nice and sound so down to earth! If it weren’t for them and writing on this blog, my mind would be mush!
