Oh, how I love Robert Frost! Notice he doesn’t mention which part of the country is the “right part of the country.” Perhaps the fun of our language in this melting pot we call the United States is all the diversity, and the “right part of the country” is really all the different parts of the country. I read “The Road Not Taken” at my late husband’s funeral. He was not too big on reading but knew this poem and loved the message, for he lead his life so much like it.

Frost is genius! I think most Americans, deep down, embrace the concept of our melting pot culture, and value its diversity. It’s where we all came from, and it’s made us who we are. What seems to be missing today though, in many of our newer immigrant enclaves, is the desire to assimilate. Older generations of immigrants were eager to *become American*, and took great pains to learn English. But, too many of our newer immigration populations refuse to do so. Our society/government makes it easier for them to, essentially, remain foreigners in their adoptive home. I value the contributions that all people and languages bring to the United States, and to the English language, but I feel there should be a renewed emphasis on learning “the language” and “becoming American”. I always thought that a lot of the English First movement *seemed* to have hateful overtones – and, I’m sure that there ARE a good number of “haters” who are behind/for it – but, there ARE many good and rational arguments for it as well.

Oh my God! I’ve become a reluctant, yet qualifying, supporter of the 2nd Amendment’s right to keep and bear arms, AND now I’m a proponent of the English First movement! If I’m not careful someone might try to revoke my Progressive membership card.
