Clue/Question:  This doctor’s patients often ended up . . .

(Great scrambling once again.  It took me a couple of looks to get “lesson”, and I think “helix” may be new!  I saw “hoist” and “object” immediately, but that doesn’t mean either word was obvious.  The answer letter layout gave away nothing.  Again, not the toughest answer to figure out, but part of that is due to the Jeff’s great  cartoon.  I wonder how many THOUSANDS of dollars the doctor and the hospital are going to bill for this procedure?  Have you ever looked at the “This Is Not a Bill” statement from your insurance provider, after a doctor/hospital visit?  The amounts the doctor/hospital bill for their services are ASTRONOMICAL!  The insurance companies then state the *allowable* charge, and then your *copay/deductible* and *plan covers* % come into play, before they show you what you’re going to have to pay.  It’s a very sick game that these people play, and a major reason why Obama should have shmoozed, cajoled and fought for either Single Payer coverage, or at least some kind of Public Option.  What he settled for – all too easily – does absolutely NOTHING for the average American.  If anything, it hurts the little guys, who are now forced to buy into a plan.  That sounds like another win for the corporate insurance companies to me.  The so-called Obama Care does nothing to reign in skyrocketing costs.  The Health Care Insurance cartel is as strong as ever, and we are going to continue to pay for it.  Sure, the obstructionist Republicans, with all of their hysterical scare tactics, were largely to blame, but Obama could have and SHOULD HAVE pulled off a deal that has some real meat to it.  But, no.  This is one of the many reasons why Liberals now consider Obama a closet Republican.  Be well, my friends.  These days, who can afford to be otherwise???)   —   YUR

What did you expect from a “community organizer” with no experience in running anything?

This site will allow a certain amount of “hater” talk, within reason. But, you’ve missed the point. Obama is very likely a wolf in sheep’s clothing. One of the main reasons Obama chose Biden as a running mate was for his ability to work with hostiles. He was supposed to be like Lyndon Johnson, but Obama hasn’t really utilized his strengths.

It was a good one, wasn’t it? Actually, OBJECT has been around for awhile, but HOIST, HELIX & LESSON are all new. Would you believe the database is now up to 2455 words? New ones just keep coming and coming!

My comment was not intended to be “hater” talk. I was just pointing out President Obama’s lack of experience and leadership ability. I don’t know how you got “hater” talk out of my comment. Before he became a Senator and then President he was a “community organizer.”

    @ ralis95,

I was fairly certain HELIX was new, but I’m surprised to hear both HOIST and LESSON are new. LESSON is pretty common, and HOIST is such a great crossword puzzle word that I would have bet that we’d seen it somewhere in the past. Mr. Hoyt is doing a bang-up job!

HELIX was a great choice! I got it right away, but I had to look up definition later. Ah, ha! DNA, bathroom tub stopper device, and pumpkin vine! P.S.-I wish some of my doctors had a sense of humor like this doc! 🙂

    @ Mac,

Because it’s dismissive and misleading. It’s the kind of code/crap the Republicans used in ’08 and the tea baggers use ’til today. He started out as a community organizer, but then was an Illinois State’s Senator for two terms, then was a U.S. Senator for a term. You’ve got to start out doing something, right? Before George W. Bush was Governor of Texas – for a little over one term – what did he do??? Did he hold any elective office??? No. He was busy running businesses into the ground. But I don’t want to make this a bash George Bush matter, anymore than I want to support the job Barack Obama has done up to now. Like I stated earlier, a lot has to do with the obstructionism he has faced, and continues to face, but when you look at the totality of what he’s done, and what he’s failed to do, guys like me see more sinister forces at work. I feel that all of us who got him elected have been duped.

    @ Lesley,

At one time, I was big into bio-techs, so HELIX was a no brainer for me. I lost my shirt on the bio-techs, but I did add to my knowledge base . . . some.

I totally agree with what you have expressed. Likewise, in my country, we are also facing the same higher and higher cost of medical care.
When we grow old, we cannot afford to fall sick. When we fall sick, it is better to vacate our space in the stream of Life!
    Well said, my friend!

Sadly, we are seeing this in the U.S. as well. Many of our seniors are on a very limited fixed income, and they have to make a choice between their over-priced medications and eating and having a roof over their heads. When faced with such a daunting option, which would ANY OF US choose? This also applies to people who are trying to raise families on little more than the minimum wage.

People need to wake up in this country. Republicans love to talk about the “Redistribution of Wealth”. Well, what do they think has been going on for the last 25 years??? With each and every act of De-regulation wealth has been siphoned away FROM the middle class and poor, and *redistributed* TO the rich and the corporations. It progressed steadily, yet imperceptibly, for decades, and not many caught on to this until the bottom fell out of the economy.

Today’s wages, as a share of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) are at the lowest levels since the 1930s! What does that tell you? It SHOULD tell you that there are major wrongs that need to be righted.

OUR wealth did not evaporate into the ether. And, it wasn’t off-shored to India, or China. It’s still here, in the richest country the world has ever seen. It’s just not in the pockets of the people anymore. It’s in the bank vaults of the mega-rich and large corporations. We have essentially been robbed, little by little, each and every day, for decades. But, far too many of us seem content to say (like a frat pledge being *paddled*): “Thank you, sir! May I have another?!”

I got helix right away–I’m sure all the science courses I have had to take helped me with that one. I went from “loosen” to “lessen” to “lesson”, once I said “lessen” out loud. Got my flu shot today, which reminded me of this jumble. Have never gotten the flu, and have gotten the vaccination for the last 4 years or so. Everyone get a flu shot!
