Philosophy:  A route of many roads leading from nowhere to nothing.”   —   Ambrose Bierce

(A little gem, from a true master of satire.  That’s it!  Be well and do good, my friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  O.K., just a little more.  Lots of musicians’ and singers’ birthdays today!  Jazz great Horace Silver is 83.  Sam Gooden (The Impressions) is 72.  Jimmy Clanton is 71.  And Rosalind Ashford (Martha & the Vandellas) is 68!  Also, two of my favorite athletes turn 63 today: Terry Bradshaw and (Tiny) Nate Archibald!  And, actor Mark Harmon (also played college football) turns 60 today.  When he was younger I always thought he looked like the biggest goofball!  Don’t get me wrong, he’s always been a handsome fellow, but when guys like him smile they just look like big doofy kids.  He did play a pretty scary serial killer when he was young, but I almost always saw a doofus.  Now that he’s older and greyer, and playing a generally serious character, he’s much more credible, in my eyes.  But, I saw him on Letterman a month or so ago, and he was all smiles and happy, and all I could think was . . . goofball!   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Ricky taking cryptic clues from Lucy???

KARCO  =  CROAK,  UHRES  =  USHER,  SNCIEC  =  SCENIC,  TIUOAP  =  UTOPIA   —   Giving us:  OKUSCTP

Clue/Question:  He called his broker to buy more shares because he wanted to do this.

Answer:  STOCK UP

(Is Jeff reaching the “APEX” of Jumble cartooning?  You’ll have to Google Canadian Allied Petroleum to figure that one out!  Great Classic TV reference!  They have to draw their inspiration from wherever they can, folks.  I liked the whole thing.  I had to think on “usher”.  I got lazy with “utopia” and backed into it, without giving it a fair amount of effort.  Too bad, because I’ve always liked the word.  I thought “croak” and “scenic” were easy, but I liked how they were scrambled too.  And, no giveaways with the answer letter layout!  Yay!  I found the answer pretty obvious, but I liked the way everything kind of fell into place.  Besides this, and the Cryptoquote, I even did the crossword puzzle today!  I can’t remember the last time I did that!  One of the clues just caught my eye – M*A*S*H* procedure – and I knew what it was.  Then, I got the surrounding words, and I kind of figured out the theme of the crossword, so I went on a tear.  I really surprised myself, because I always remembered the Friday one as being more difficult.  But, I really don’t want to get back into the habit of doing them, because they can be quite time consuming.  So, no more.  Have a great Labor Day weekend, friends.  Be well and do good!)    —   YUR

PS. This “Usher” is dedicated to my daughter.  I know she and my niece are big fans of his.   —   YUR
