Jumbling Dice? Spoiler – 07/26/11

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards

Image via Wikipedia

Visual Description:  Mick struttin’, while Keith’s strummin’ hits a snag.

MAREF  =  FRAME,  FLFUB  =  BLUFF,  POTEDP  =  TOPPED,  ETWRET  =  WETTER   —   Giving us: REFTDTE

Clue/Question:  When his guitar string broke during the performance, he did this.

Answer:  FRETTED

(Gotta love it!  Stones, baby!  Very nicely timed with Mick’s 68th Birthday, today.  Happy  Birthday to my brotha-from-anotha-motha!  Wow.  I really must have been an afterthought.  There is nearly 14 years between our births.  Of course, cousin Keith LOOKS a LOT older than the Mick, but he’s actually younger, by about 5 months.  Too bad there wasn’t enough space for cousins Ronnie and Charlie, but whadayagonnado!  Very nice tribute, Jeff.  Who woulda thought that these guys would still be going strong at this age?  I coulda swore that they would have faded away – or worse yet, died – in the later ’70s.  I remember seeing Mick give an “interview” during the celebration for the Bicentennial, back in 1976.  I’m not sure if he was *baked* to a delicate crunch, or *fried* to a crackly crunch, but he was positively kafackled, my friends!  Ahh, youth!

Hey!  The Jumble itself was not too shabby, as well.  Some fun clue words, all well-scrambled.  And, nothing obvious about how the answer letters played out.  Good work, Hoyt.  Be well, do good, friends.  And, keep on rockin’!)   —   YUR

PS.  Here’s a little vintage title(?) song struttin’ by the birthday boy.  Enjoy!

Jumble Spoiler – 07/25/11

Disposable diaper, size 12-25kg/26-55lb.

Visual Description:  Toddler, in a certain fixation stage?

PHYPA  =  HAPPY,  NNIOO  =  ONION,  TECDTE  =  DETECT,  HCOSOE  =  CHOOSE   —   Giving us:  HPPOIODETHOO

Clue/Question:  When presented with the idea of a diaper change, the baby . . .

Answer:  POOHPOOHED IT

(I’m certain some of our more Poop-phobic puzzlers are offended by today’s Jumble answer.  Possibly even . . . OUTRAGED!  Now, don’t go getting your bowels in an uproar.  This stool shall pass.  Americans, especially, have an almost irrational fear of good ol’ # 2.  A lot of it stems from the media and Madison Avenue, and a lot of the mentality is kind of urban-driven.  Country folk just see it all as part of the natural cycle of life.  In one form or another – even human – it’s been fertilizing the world since the dawn of life on earth.  Faunal, that is.  Lighten your load, folks.  It’s just a pun.  And, the words Mr. Hoyt used aren’t of a fecal nature, anyway.  Be well, and doo-doo good!)   —   YUR

Sunday Cryptoquote Spoiler – 07/24/11

Milton Friedman, proud father of global misery

Image by Steve Rhodes via Flickr

Inflation is the one form of taxation that can be imposed without legislation.”   —   Milton Friedman

(I agree that inflation is very similar to a tax on the consumer, but “imposed” seems to be a strange choice of words.  It makes it sound like inflation is applied or arranged, instead of it simply occurring, as a result of a variety of economic factors.  Hmm!  Since Friedman was the Economics expert I guess this should really make us think!  Keep questioning things, friends.)   —   YUR

Sunday Jumble Spoiler – 07/24/11

Map of number of Norwegians per U.S. State,

Visual Description:  Lesley(?) laying down the law!

NHYEHP  =  HYPHEN,  ETANBE  =  BEATEN,  ADRYFT  =  DRAFTY,  NICICL  =  CLINIC,  YBSBAH  =  SHABBY,  DILRAA  =  RADIAL   —   Giving us:  YEETDATCLSARL

Clue/Question:  The teacher thought that her questions for the verbal U.S. Geography test were this.

Answer:  CLEARLY STATED

(Not too “shabby”!  Another good Sunday Jumble.  I really liked seeing “hyphen”.  I don’t remember having seen it before.  Maybe ralis95 can let us know if it’s new, or not.  And, I had a tough time getting “radial”.  I kept expecting “air” to be part of the word.  I’m pretty sure we have had “radial” before, but under a different scrambling I’d guess.  The answer letters were scrambled better today, than they were yesterday.  And, I do like the longer answers.  But, I think the combination of the map, and the phrasing of the teacher’s admonishment, made the answer fairly obvious.  Eh!  Whadayagonnado?  No one said yer uncle had to clearly state anything.  Be well, do good, friends.)   —   YUR

To practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow.  So do it.”   —   Kurt Vonnegut

(This is one of the reasons why Vonnegut is one of my all-time favorite authors.  So glad to finally see a Vonnegut quotation in the Cryptoquote.  This is the first since I’ve been posting the spoilers.  I wonder if some republicans  have some kind of base aversion to this quote?  Hmm???  Be well, friends.  Peace.)   —   YUR

Jumble Spoiler – 07/23/11

Hemingway

Visual Description:  “Papa” looking to renovate his Soflo abode.

APNWR  =  PRAWN,  SRMUT  =  STRUM,  EEPELD  =  PEELED,  UNOCYT  =  COUNTY   —   Giving us:  RNSTMEEEONY

Clue/Question:  Having this made it possible for Hemingway to upgrade his house.

Answer:  ERNEST MONEY

(How can you NOT like today’s Jumble?  Some good clue words, nicely scrambled.  Fairly decent – coulda been better – scrambling of the answer letters.  An answer that has both a lightly used adjective, and makes for a good pun.  And the whole Hemingway theme is timed nicely to coincide with the 112th anniversary of his birth.  Festivities are still going on in Key West.  The lookalike contest was just in the news this morning.  I was looking for my buddy, Frank, but it’s kind of hard to spot someone in a sea of very similar looking people.  Today’s was another good example of the guys trying to shake things up a bit.  Yer uncle approves.  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

Always do sober what you said you’d do drunk, that will teach you to keep your mouth shut.”   —   Ernest Hemingway

(Yeah, but how many drunks do you know who can keep their mouths shut?  Alcohol has ways of loosening inhibitions and the tongue.  Probably best just not to drink!  Heresy, Lee?!?!  Well, maybe just not until drunk.  Although, that’s not always easy to do.  Now is it, folks?  Even those of us who drink in moderation can sometimes, unwittingly, reach/breach that tipping point.  Oh, the stories I could tell!  Yesterday was Ernest Hemingway’s birthday!  I knew it, but forgot/neglected to note it in yesterday’s postings.  My buddy, Frank Wagner is down in Key West, FL this week.  I told him he should enter a “Papa” lookalike contest.  He bears a pretty decent resemblance to the Old Man!  Today would have been Alexander Calder‘s 113th birthday!  Lots of great living birthdays today, as usual.  But, I’m going to limit my greetings to two.  Alex Trebek turns 71 today.  I’ve always been a huge Jeopardy fan!  And, actor-comedian-director Albert Brooks is 64 today.  Very funny man.  Happy birthday!  Peace.)   —   YUR

Washington Monument circa 1860. Library of Con...

Image via Wikipedia

Visual Description:  Inspiration from one of Jeff’s kid’s American History projects?

UNBTL  =  BLUNT,  ETKAN  =  TAKEN,  LOLBYD  =  BOLDLY,  UMSRME  =  SUMMER   —   Giving us:  UNTAENOLMM

Clue/Question:  The construction project based on plans drawn by Robert Mills was this.

Answer:  MONUMENTAL

(Clue word-wise, very similar to yesterday’s!  Not new, fairly standard words, but they were well-scrambled.  The answer letters were scrambled very nicely today, as well.  It looks like Jeff drew some inspiration from some Wikipedia photos, of the plans and building of the Washington Monument!  I’ve always been a big history buff – although, as I get older I see how very subjective it largely is – so I welcome historical themed Jumbles.  You can only do so many husband/wife, general human interaction type Jumbles without them getting kind of redundant.  Bring ’em on, guys!  Education never hurt anyone!  Now, which picture should I use?  The proposed sketch, or the monument under construction?  Hmm!  Concepts are great, but execution makes for employment.  Even if it’s, technically, only temporary employment. Be well, friends.)   —   YUR

Visual Description:  Aquatic mammals blocking access to the boater’s vessel.

YFTAF  =  TAFFY,  ELDWL  =  DWELL,  SCETOL  =  CLOSET,  LEWFOL  =  FELLOW   —   Giving us:  AFDELOSFE

Clue/Question:  He would have trouble getting to his boat as a result of it being this.

Answer:  SEALED OFF

(Not bad!  Clue words were pretty basic, but I liked how they were scrambled.  Especially “closet”.  And, there was nothing obvious in the answer letters, today.  The cartoon makes it as easy as can be, but it was still fun.  We got the little light house on the horizon, instead of the sinking sailboat.  Just to change things up a little!  Be well and do good, friends.)   —   YUR

PS.  Two of my favorites turn 63 today:  singer Yusuf Islam (aka: Cat Stevens) and Gary Trudeau (Doonesbury creator).  Today is also Robin Williams‘ 63rd and Jon Lovitz‘s 54th!  (Oh, yeah.  Jon and I go WAAY back!  We’re thick as thieves.  And, if you don’t believe me you can ask my wife . . . Morgan Fairchild!  That’s the ticket!)  Happy Birthday to one and all!   —   YUR
